Cardinal Farnese to the nuncio Poggio, 7 August 1542

The companion of Vatican Challenge Part 5 (DECODE R91, catalogue 262), in another key: Meister’s 1906 key no. 2, “the last cipher with Mons. Poggio”, never before tied to this letter. Read polyphonically and corrected in five places on the letter (02 for b/c, co 26 not printed), it gives 80% of the 2,965 figures as Italian (67% certain) after an image re-read and four reading passes, the last allowing for the clerk’s slips. Paul III will not brand the King of France the Turk’s ally for Charles V. The letter, catalogued as of December 1541, is of 7 August 1542; a readable copy is in Chigi L III 65, not online. Corrosion and codes outside the printed table keep the rest open.

TASK: take a partial decipherment further: Cardinal Farnese to the nuncio Poggio, 7 August 1542
This page: https://dbourdeau.github.io/cyphersolver/further/farnese1541.html

You are helping a public research project finish reading historical cipher letters. This one is read in part:
the key works, but some pieces are still open. Your job is to close one or more of the open gaps below.

THE READING
Write-up: https://dbourdeau.github.io/cyphersolver/farnese1541.html (read it first: how the text was read, the key, the reading)
  Date: 1542
Outcome: external key matched · partial
Read now: 79.7% of the deciphered cipher tokens give sense (pieces below may be untouched)

OPEN GAPS (from NOTES.md, "## Remaining gaps")
  1. [illegible: needs a new source] corrosion holes at the right edge of 64r l.16-20 and at the line ends of 65r (~45 positions) - blocker: illegible; only hole outlines remain on the only image
  2. [illegible: needs a new source] 64v.12 pos 1-15 and 64v.13 pos 1-4 - blocker: illegible; ink-burnt and holed, digit count not fixed on the image
  3. [illegible: needs a new source] 65r.15-18 (15.19-42, 16.5-42, 17.1-34, 18.1-45) - blocker: illegible; corrosion through almost every sign, no digit readable better than the re-read (~140 tokens)
  4. [illegible: needs a new source] 65r.10 pos 1-16 and 65r.12 pos 44 - 65r.13 pos 9 - blocker: illegible; corroded starts and brown outlines at the line end
  5. [illegible: needs a new source] 65r.23 pos 53-55 (end of *finalme[nte]*) - blocker: illegible; at the edge of holes
  6. [open-codes: doable now] clear digit stretches that spell nothing under the key after four passes (the last allowing one miswritten digit per word): 64r.16 after "il" and 64r.17 before "laltro" (26 digits), 64r.18-19 short runs, 64v.6 start and middle, 64v.7 start, 64v.10 after "iudica" and 64v.11 `2 6 0 3`, 64v.12 `2 9 0 8 4 8 1`, 64v.14 after "sente" and "pochi", 64v.17-19 around "di concorrer", 64v.21; 65r.2.56-3.8, 65r.5.51-6.4, 65r.8.28-30 and 8.59-9.14, 65r.10.59-11.1, 65r.13.47-51, 65r.14.37-52, 65r.20.53-21.2, 65r.22.21-23 - blocker: open-codes; digits sharp, no word of key 2 fits even with one slip per word: words not found, insertions or omissions by the clerk, or codes outside the printed table, which only the clear text would settle: it exists in BAV Chigi L III 65 (Pastor read it), AAV Lettere di principi 14A and the Naples Carte Farnesiane, none digitised

ALREADY TRIED (from NOTES.md, "## Escalation")
[x] siblings: IA-2 (R92, the companion letter of 15 Apr 1542) is another key, solved by Klee; DECODE has no other Farnese item of 1538-48 (18 Sept search); R91's four document images are cleartext Farnese letters of summer 1542
[x] clear-pages: the clear lines 64r 1-15 and f. 66r are the letter's own clear frame (legates, Nuremberg diet, Buda, date and signature), not a decipherment; no interlinear decipherment on any page
[x] known-keys: Meister 1906 keys nos. 1-4 tried; key 1 as printed fails (-4.12 nats/char), key 2 fits read polyphonically; Klee's IA-2 key does not transfer
[x] print: Cardauns NB I/7 (1912) and Pastor V (1909) read 6 Nov 2026: the letter is Farnese to Poggio of 7 Aug 1542, which Pastor paraphrases from BAV Chigi L III 65 (no text printed); register copies in AAV Lettere di principi 14A, minutes in the Naples Carte Farnesiane; none digitised. Earlier: Simonetta's article on Farnese nuncios' letters in the Likhachev collection concerns Guidiccioni 1537; the decifrato, if one survives, would be in the Nunziatura di Spagna registers or the Carte Farnesiane (Naples), not online
[x] key-rebuild: k2b -> k2d (b/c 02, s/z/et 1, null 11, ci 24, co 26), every syllable family's order tested (24 permutations each), scan of unassigned pairs for missing codes, Francia 000 added from Meister p. 177, code 23 shown unused, no digit group recurs across the unread runs (only 8048, three times), so no missing code word
[x] retry: image re-read of every line, key-guided image check of every unread stretch, three reading passes with cribs and a dictionary lattice (`probe.py`, `wordfit.py`), a fourth pass allowing one clerk's slip per word (`wordfit.py --slip`, 20 accepted), code 23 tested on every occurrence (not used)

STEPS
0. Set up. If you can run a shell, fork and clone the repository and work inside it:
     git clone https://github.com/dbourdeau/cyphersolver.git
Then read, in this order: CONTRIBUTING.md (how a contribution is sent and credited); README.md, sections
"Repository layout" and "Conventions" (how readings are measured and named); targets/farnese1541/NOTES.md in full, and the
key, transcription and reading files it names; lang/README.md (shared language models).
Work in targets/farnese1541/. Add your findings to NOTES.md under a dated heading without rewriting what is there, and
update the "## Remaining gaps" line of every gap you close. Keep WORKLOG.md there: one dated line per step
(hypothesis, value tried, solver run, crib, control), failures included. Do not edit docs/ (the site is generated).
If you cannot run a shell, fetch the files from the links above and keep your work in files you send with the issue.
1. Pick a gap. Start with the ones marked "doable now" (open-codes, not-attempted, left-open): the images and the key
are online, so they need only work. A gap marked "needs a new source" (no-key-material, too-short, illegible,
needs-physical-access) can be closed only by something new: a key
or a deciphered sibling found elsewhere, a better image, a printed edition or calendar, a photograph from the archive.
For those, search for that material first, and say where you looked even when you find nothing.
2. Start from the existing key and transcription in the folder. Do not rebuild the key from scratch, and do not
re-read parts that are already read unless you find an error in them.
3. For a code group or sign value: list every place the group occurs, show how each reads with the value you propose,
and say what still does not fit. For a passage: re-read it at the image and give the folio and line. For a missing
letter or leaf: say where it is held and how it can be reached.
4. Measure again. Apply the key to the whole text, write the reading file, and count the share of cipher tokens that
   give sense (not an estimate). The reading is "complete" only when (1) at least 95% of its cipher tokens give sense;
   (2) no gap is left untried; (3) every letter in it is covered; (4) what stays open is scattered code groups or names,
or pieces blocked from outside. Otherwise it stays "partial": say which gaps are still open and why.
5. Be honest. Mark every uncertain word with [?], leave unread groups as their numbers or signs, and never fill a gap
with a plausible guess. A gap retried and still open, with what was ruled out, is worth reporting.

REPORT BACK
With a clone: open a pull request with your changes to targets/farnese1541/. Say in the description which gaps you worked on,
the share read before and after, and how you want to be credited (name, initials or handle, and a link).
Without one: open an issue: https://github.com/dbourdeau/cyphersolver/issues/new?template=further-reading.yml&title=Further+reading%3A+farnese1541&page=farnese1541.html
Give the write-up, the gap you worked on (its line in Remaining gaps, or the code group, folio and line), what you
propose, the evidence (every occurrence, the images or sources), the share read before and after, your step log,
and the tools and AI model you used.
If you cannot open issues or pull requests, write this report for your human to send. Credit goes to the person who sends it.

Open gaps

gold can be done now: the images and the key are online, it needs only work. grey needs a new source first: a key, a better scan, an edition or the archive.
