Two cipher letters to Ottavio Piccolomini, c. 1646

A student’s thesis deciphered one letter of a Piccolomini cipher run and printed the key; applied to the two letters it left aside, the key gives Italian, but from poor photographs not yet sentences.

The letters
Inv. 24874 and 24876, two Italian letters to Ottavio Piccolomini, undated on the frames and probably of 1646, by writers not identified. 24874 begins in mid-letter; 24876 has two cipher blocks among clear lines (news from Vienna, Linz and Ratisbona).
Where
State Regional Archives Zlámrsk (SOA Zámrsk), Rodinný archiv Piccolominů. The images are photographs of a microfilm-reader screen in the appendix of V. Vlnas’s 2017 thesis (appendix B21, B22); letters are 15–20 pixels high. Not on DECODE.
The cipher
Consonants written plain, vowels a e i o u as the odd digits 1 3 5 7 9, even digits and plain vowel letters as nulls. In this cursive hand the digit 5 and the short s look alike, and so do 9, g and q, so many words depend on a choice by sense.
How it was deciphered
With the key V. Vlnas printed in 2017 for the neighbouring inv. 24873 (ch. 4.2, table 3), applied unchanged; the additions are 0 as a null, long s, and class signs for the lookalikes. Two passes of transcription per letter, reconciled on the image, and one independent blind check.
What it says
In 24874: letters received, “gran consolazione dalla di lei lettera”, a request for a just and exact report, and “l’arciduca mio signore”; the clear tail announces Don Miguel de Salamanca. In 24876: that the Duke of Bavaria wants peace by all means. Only part of this builds sentences.
Still open
Most sentences have holes, about 15 signs are unresolved, and a clean scan from SOA Zamrsk has not been ordered. The writers and dates are not known.
Credit
The key is V. Vlnas’s (2017). WAINUT transcribed the two letters, decoded them and checked them, working with AI agents; no human palaeographer has checked the text.

01 The letters

Inv. 24873 to 24876 sit in a run of Piccolomini cipher frames that Vlnas dates, where dated, to 1646; 24873_2 is dated in clear “li 13 [?9bre] 1646”. In 1646 Piccolomini served Spain in the Low Countries, and Archduke Leopold Wilhelm was named governor of the Spanish Netherlands at the end of that year, which fits 24874’s “governo” and “l’arciduca mio signore”, though nothing in the text names him. 24876’s Bavarian passages fit Bavaria’s move toward a separate truce in late 1646; this is context, not a statement of the letter.

V. Vlnas deciphered 24873 in his thesis Počítačová analýza šifrované korespondence rodu Piccolomini (Hradec Králové 2017) and did not decipher 24874 and 24876. That decipherment is prior art; what is new here is the first transcription and decoding of these two.

02 The key and its test

The even digits (2, 4, 6, 8 and 0) carry no value where the word around them reads as Italian: 24874 has 65 of them in 645 signs. A six is close to b and to t in this hand, so at two places a six stands where the sense needs another letter; both are marked as repairs. The writer often writes a doubled consonant once, as in 24873.

The key was frozen before the bare frames were transcribed and then applied to part of the cipher postscript of 24873_2, which Vlnas did not print. The 14 groups copied there all decode to Italian unchanged (desidera Sua Altezza, ragguaglio, sono, come ancora lei, che venendo, se ne possa governare). That is weak evidence: the key is a published table that could not have been tuned, the solver chose and scored the groups, and there is no external decipherment to grade against. The stronger support is that the key turns both letters, in two hands, into running Italian on the solver’s signs and on the blind check’s copy alike.

03 What is decoded, and why it is not read

Of 116 words in the cipher part of 24874, 76 decode verbatim from the signs (65.5%), and of 50 in 24876, 32 (64.0%). These are word counts of the decode, not a read share: the words do not yet build sentences (2 of 6 cipher sentences in 24874, 1 of 3 in 24876). Counted strictly, with no s/i or g/q/u/v choice, the figures are 33 of 116 (28.4%) and 14 of 50 (28.0%). Marked repairs, 6 and 4 words, are counted apart, and so are 7 and 2 words known only from context. Both letters are therefore decoded, not read.

24874 gives, in part: “Ecelenza havrà recevuto la mia delli [tredeci] … gran consolazione dalla di lei [lettera] … desidera dunque una giusta et per[…] relatione … asicurandola che … havrà consolatione”. Lines 1 to 3, the faintest on the photograph, are mostly holes. The decoded text with every hole, and a draft English translation, are under Full texts; the clear passages there are draft readings from the photograph and are not counted.

inv. 24874 (Vlnas 2017 appendix B21) decoded, not read

An outline only (the letter is decoded, not read). The writer, reporting for someone he calls 'l'arciduca mio signore', says that 'Sua [...]' (the title is a hole) took great consolation from Piccolomini's [?letter] and wishes 'una giusta et per [...] relatione', since Piccolomini knows best which advices are needed; the middle mentions a 'modo et governo' and 'the political government'. The clear tail announces the coming of Don Miguel de Salamanca. Archduke Leopold Wilhelm was named governor of the Spanish Netherlands at the end of 1646, which fits, but the text does not name him.

A mechanical decode with holes in most sentences: shown so that the transcription and the key can be checked and improved, not as a reading.

# 24874: reading (Italian) and translation

Image: Vlnas 2017, appendix zip P_lohy_A_a_B.zip (theses.cz/id/p3p2kb), frame 24874.jpg (original: SOA Zámrsk,
Rodinný archiv Piccolominiů, inv. 24874). The frame begins in mid-letter; 19 cipher lines,
then 4 clear lines. Key: `key_frozen.tsv` (Vlnas 2017, table 3). Status: **decoded, not read** (reading review, 6 Nov 2026: 2 of
6 cipher sentences read; the sentence check in Italian finds 1 of 8 cipher sentences clean).

Counts (`python scripts/check_marks.py`): 116 words; **76 decoded verbatim from the signs (65.5%; not a read share)**, of which 33 (28.4%)
need no s/i or g/q/u/v class choice and 29 (25.0%) contain no S, G or 5; 6 with a marked repair; 7 guessed from
context; 27 holes. Verbatim plus marked repairs: 82 (70.7%). 77 class signs are resolved by context in the read words.

## Marked reading (one unit per decrypted word; checked by `scripts/check_marks.py`)

Marks: `{a/b}` reads a where the signs give b; `{+a}` letter not given by any sign; `{-b}` sign value dropped;
`[...]` word not read; `[?word]` guess from context only. S (s or 5) and G (g, q or 9) are read as the sense needs;
that choice is counted separately and is not a repair. Words split over a line end are counted once per line.

Notes on the marks: L04 `da{l/h}la`: the sign is a looped ascender read as h, the sense needs l (dalla). L06
`esi{+b}isce`: a six stands where the sense needs b (esibisce); in this hand six and b are close and the six may be
meant as b. L09 `poli{+t}ico`: the same case; the sign is a six (both passes and the independent blind copy), the
sense needs t. L09 `dal`: the a rests on a doubtful sign (a short hooked minim without a clear dot, read r in pass 1);
it is counted as verbatim; if that sign is not 1, "dal" is a repair and the count is 75 of 116 (64.7%). L12
`avertimen{t/l}i`: the sign is a tall stroke without a cross-stroke, read l by both passes and the blind copy; this
hand's t and l differ only by the cross-stroke (as in 24876 `tu{t/l}ta`). L12 `[?che_siano]`: an ink blot covers one
sign. L15 `{c/?}`: an ink blot covers the sign. L17 `{-?}`: a stroke after g that is not a letter of the word.

inv. 24876 (Vlnas 2017 appendix B22) decoded, not read

Two cipher passages between clear news (the letter is decoded, not read). Block A is fragments: Bavaria, 'so that we must fight', complaints already answered. Block B, with holes at its head: 'the Duke of Bavaria wants peace by all means, so that he [?can] consider the advantage we shall have'. The clear text reports prisoners' news of the enemy and, from Vienna, a journey to Linz and then Ratisbona. Fits Bavaria's moves toward a separate truce in late 1646 (Ulm, March 1647); context only.
