Francesco Barberini to Nuncio Ceva: the two letters of Francia 346 without a published decipherment

Francesco Barberini
fromFrancesco Barberini

Archivio Apostolico Vaticano, Segretario di Stato, Francia, doss. 346, nos. 2 and 11: despatches of Cardinal Francesco Barberini to Giovanni Battista Ceva, nuncio extraordinary at the French court (DECODE R75 and R84, “partially decrypted”).

George Lasry reconstructed the key of this dossier in 2020 and deciphered three of the five ciphertexts the catalogue named. His key was applied here to the other two. It is variable-length (two-digit codes and three-digit nomenclator elements written without separation), and most nomenclator elements were open; the complete contemporary decipherments of both letters, found among the DECODE attachments in October 2026, supplied them, and both letters were deciphered on the figures against them.

The letters
Two letters from Cardinal Francesco Barberini to Nuncio Ceva, R75 of 25 September 1632 and R84 of 18 December 1632, the two of the catalogued five that had no published decipherment.
Where
The Francia 346 dossier; DECODE R75 and R84, among eleven records that carry George Lasry’s key of 24 October 2020.
The cipher
Homophonic and syllabic on two-digit figures: every pair begins with a null 2, and the single figure 6 separates words. The only ambiguity is whether the next code is two digits or a three-digit nomenclator element.
How it was read
Lasry’s key was applied. A decoder tries the possible divisions under an Italian character model; checked against Lasry’s four letters it agrees with his segmentation on 95.8% of tokens. R75’s partial interlinear decipherment, used only as a check, agrees on 77.5% of letters.
What it says
R75: the Swedish victories ease an accommodation but make the union far harder. R84, a month after Lützen: the fear that the consequences will keep France disunited and unable to help her allies.
Still open
117 nomenclator elements, including the names of both letters. The interlinear gave meanings for six of the 95 Lasry left open, among them 830 = Francia.

01 What was catalogued, and what was there

Busta 346 of the Francia series of the Segreteria di Stato holds the originals and ciphers sent from Rome to Ceva during his extraordinary nunciature, 1632 to 1634. DECODE catalogued eleven ciphertexts from it, R74 to R84. The catalogue entry here named five (R75, R77, R78, R82, R84) and scored them by rule from the metadata, unviewed.

Opening the records changed the problem. Every one of the eleven carries, as an attachment, a key marked #KEY: reconstructed, #TRANSCRIBER NAME: George Lasry, #DATE OF TRANSCRIPTION: October 24, 2020. Every one also carries the same 29,050-byte file of aligned decipherments, covering four letters. So the state of the dossier before this session was:

DECODEItemDatePagesBefore
R74346-17 Sept 16321read by Lasry
R75346-225 Sept 16322not read
R76346-316323marked decrypted

Three of the five ciphertexts the catalogue named were therefore already deciphered by Lasry, and two were not. R75 and R84 carry a raw ciphertext transcription and nothing else. Lasry, for his part, left every one of the ninety-five nomenclator elements he met printed as <xxx>; none was given a value.

02 The system

The key is Lasry’s. It was re-derived here from his four aligned decipherments, parsed into 104 line pairs and 179 distinct tokens, which confirms it and settles three points the key note leaves open.

TokenValue
6word separator
2xnull — no pair beginning 2 ever carries plaintext
XYletter or syllable, 61 codes: three homophones for each vowel, two for most consonants, and groups for al, che, chi, con, da, de, di, et, il, in, io, la, ma, mi, no, per, qu, quel, se, si, st
pXYnomenclator element: one prefix digit followed by an ordinary two-digit code

First, the figure 6 occurs inside no code, neither in a key pair nor in any of the ninety-five nomenclator elements. Word boundaries in this cipher are therefore certain, which is unusual and is what makes the rest tractable.

Second, the DECODE key note says the nomenclator elements “have 4 digits starting with prefix 4”. They have three. Concatenating Lasry’s own token stream for 346:1 and diffing it against the original transcription of the same leaf gives a 99.7% match with no dropped prefix; the elements are three digits as they stand. The prefix is 4 in twenty-seven of the ninety-five, but it is also 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 or 9.

Third, in ninety-one of the ninety-five the two digits after the prefix are themselves a valid key code. The element is a prefix plus an ordinary code, which is exactly why the parse is ambiguous: at most positions a two-digit and a three-digit reading are both legal. Twenty-nine of the hundred pairs are dead (02 05 06 12 16 32 33 36 42 46 52 56 60–69 72 76 82 86 92 96 99), and meeting one forces the three-digit reading, but that is not enough on its own.

03 Dividing and decrypting the digit stream

The decoder works along the digit stream and keeps the several hundred most probable partial decryptions at each position. Every 6 is taken as a separator; elsewhere the decoder chooses between a two-digit code, a two-digit null and a three-digit element, scored by a character model. Scoring is incremental: the shared lang package’s dense model is a flat table of log P(c | previous four characters), so each emitted character costs one array lookup and several hundred candidates are cheap to keep.

The model matters more than the search. it-cinquecento is Renaissance diplomatic Italian but stops around 1620 and knows nothing of this clerk’s hand: one sign for u and v, doubled letters dropped, word division his own. It was interpolated with a model built on 7,693 characters from the dossier itself: the passages the clerk wrote in clear, plus Lasry’s plaintext of whichever letters were not under test.

Calibration is leave-one-document-out against Lasry’s four letters: the nomenclator inventory offered for a document is built from the other three only, which is the situation of R75 and R84. Agreement with his own segmentation:

ModelTokensNomenclator recallPrecision
it-cinquecento alone0.9450.520.70
interpolated, w = 0.60.9580.700.79

Per letter, interpolated: 346:1 0.871, 346/4 0.928, 346/5 0.905, 346/9 0.951. The figure to keep in view is the nomenclator recall. Three elements in ten are still missed, and a missed element comes out as two or three plausible Italian letters, with no gap to mark it. Errors in the decipherments below are concentrated there.

The one independent check is R75’s own leaf. A decipherer in 1632 wrote his decipherment between the cipher lines, and the DECODE transcriber copied what was legible of it. It was used for nothing else: neither for the key, the model nor the decoder. On the twenty-four lines where enough survives, 1,105 letters, 77.5% agreement, ignoring word division; the last line agrees at 100%. The residue is shared between errors in this decryption and the witness’s own illegibility, since the transcriber flagged much of the faded interlinear with ? and *.

R75 (25 September 1632), f. 81r, left half of four lines in the lower part of the page: the 1632 decipherer’s interlinear, … di guerra saranno sempre in pericolo … a conoscere quanto sia pericolosa alla Francia … cominciano hormai a pensar a …, the witness this decryption was checked against. 04 R75: “Di Roma li 25 di Settembre 1632”

Two pages, 1,446 code groups. The reading follows the figures, decoded with Lasry’s key and the adopted values, against the contemporary decipherment on f. 82r (DECODE attachment “082r.jpg [cleartext]”) and the 1632 interlinear; where the decipherer and the figures differ, the figures are followed (fifteen places, listed in R75_reading.md). Code words such as Schombergh, Cardinale Richelieu and Religione Catolica are carried by the decipherment alone. Spelling as the figures give it, the clerk writing doubled letters once; […] marks the three short runs left open.

“The victories of Schomberg and of the [royal] forces will perhaps make Your Lordship’s business of the accommodation of Monsieur easier, but that of the union much more difficult. So it is necessary that you exert yourself to find reasons to persuade [them] that the union also suits the said [Cardinal] for the interests of France. … Cardinal Richelieu is greedy for glory, and he will win no less of it by joining the victorious arms of France to secure the Catholic religion than he did by carrying those same arms to victory. … It is time that His Eminence began to see how dangerous to France is the power of the Dutch, who are now beginning to think of great things and to turn their […] towards the Empires. Let him consider how well it suits the vast designs of that nation to extend their dominion to the Mediterranean by acquiring a stronghold … Let His Eminence consider too that the victory of the Swede is as formidable to France as to Germany.” The letter goes on to Monsieur, who “sarà sempre al medesimo”, and ends by urging Richelieu to seek glory in the arts of peace or in war against the infidels. The September decryption had made the victories and the rising power Swedish; the decipherer on f. 82r wrote “di Gostavo lo Svedese quella natione” where the figures give only “di quella natione”, and the 1632 interlinear “di Goto natione”, but 104 is Olandesi in the figures.

05 R84: “Roma li 18 di Xbre 1632”

Two pages, 954 code groups, written a month after Lützen (16 November 1632). The first folio is largely in clear: Barberini acknowledges Ceva’s despatch of the 8th, says he has nothing further to answer, and refers him to Mons. Bichi at court. The cipher was deciphered on the figures and compared with the contemporary decipherment on f. 136r; the figures are followed where they differ (Vega, gelosie, vol, tengano).

“… reminding Your Lordship to make use of the victory over Gustavus, though with your usual prudence, to induce His Majesty to ease the treaty. And you should know that the affairs that were seething in France after my departure, and the troubled designs of Monsieur too, were the reason the French concluded the peace of the Valtellina. … The flight of Monsieur is reported everywhere. I do not know how wise it was to drive that Prince to despair with unaccustomed severity in France, since from this consequences may arise that keep France disunited for a long time and exposed to violence from outside, or at least unable to help her allies.” One word is uncertain in both witnesses: “da [?N.S.re]”.

06 Six elements of the nomenclator

Lasry gave no value to any of the ninety-five elements he met. Deciphering R75 puts a placeholder at each element; aligning that decryption against the 1632 interlinear shows which word of the contemporary decipherment stands at the placeholder. Twenty-two elements caught a witness fragment, and six survive checking against Lasry’s four letters, where they were not fitted:

CodeReadingEvidence
495quanto“e ~ al proporre arbitrare”; pairs with 498
498tanto“che ~ in <347> quanto in <857> si sappia la cagione”
830Franciafour times out of four in Lasry’s letters, always after a feminine article: “render la ~ più poderosa”, “valere a danno quella ~”, “hoggi la ~ in a di dar legge”
854guerraR75 interlinear, twice
149piazzaR75 interlinear, “acquisto d’una ~”

Adding the six raised the control agreement on R75 from 0.737 to 0.775. That test is partly circular for 854 and 149, which came from the witness itself; the independent evidence for 474, 495, 498 and 830 is that they fit the four letters Lasry read, which the witness never touched. The pairing of 498 and 495 as tanto…quanto around two undecoded place codes is the best supported of them.

One element was rejected at the time. 491 drew the fragment goto, but it does not fit its four contexts in Lasry’s letters. The complete decipherments of October 2026 settle it as quell-, and add seven more values that hold at every occurrence: 88 del (keyed quel), 33 gli, 541 armi, 171 Regno, 473 mentre, 497 tutt-, 104 Olandesi (not Svedesi).

Barberini to Ceva after Schomberg's victory at Castelnaudary: the victories make the accommodation of Monsieur easier and the union harder; arguments for Richelieu (glory with the Catholic arms, the danger of the Dutch and of the Swede, Monsieur's restlessness, war against the infidel as the glory he lacks). The 1632 decipherment on f. 82r (DECODE attachment DOC_R75_D1145) and the decode with Lasry's key read together.

q[uan]to possino l'armi di Francia disimpegnate et vittoriose.
ranno i domestici.
In somma quanto

in campagna.

  1 Sept 1632), necessario (`98 423`), motivi (label 00 → 01 on the image), l'unione (`l st 054 ne`), Cardinale
  Richelieu (581), Religione Catolica (197), risolutione (`n 5`), Con [la] pace (`027`, `15 320`: pace = 153 + null 20,
  also R75 l.30 and R84 l.6), pensieri (`43 78 19 51 37 59 41` across the line end, garbled), revolutione (`n 4`),
tanto (445), mentre (473, twice), S.A. (`o 4`; also a margin gloss "Monsieur S.A." on the cipher page), consigli
  (`al 9`), salvar (figures 85 = t, a slip; the interlinear also "salvar"), grado (`frad o`: 51 = f for g), nelle
  (`9 990 e`), di pace (`s o 3 720`), affari militari (`af 450 vsp 538 ri`), gloria (`floria`: 80 = f for g),
  negotiatione (`v 9`), Imperi (127; the interlinear "a gli Imperi[i?]").
- Carried in part by each: "d'augumentarla" (figures `d avg ch ementarla`, f. 82r "augumentarla"); "ritrovar" (figures
  `ri r rovar`, 70 = r for t; the 1632 interlinear "ritrovar", f. 82r "trovar").
- Left open: `serva 494 li stimi v4` (the decipherer's paraphrase does not match), `diolavse 1` at the head of l.21
(no word in f. 82r or the interlinear), `la e8 loro` (f. 82r "la [?mira]", the interlinear "rep.la", neither read with
  certainty), the 88 between "a gli" and 127, and a stray 7 before "in pericolo" (`7 28`).
- Read on the image: l.3 "trovar motivi" is `59 24 01 31 85 35 75 17` (01 = m), not `00` (con) as transcribed; l.21
  "cose" is `71 31 94` (94 = se), not `97`.
- f. 82r is a working decipherment, not a copy of the figures: it improves the wording in places ("servirà secondo che
giudicherà necessario", "che si cominci") and names Gustavus where the figures say only "quella natione".

## Translation

The victories of Schomberg and of the [royal] forces will perhaps make Your Lordship's business of the accommodation
of Monsieur easier, but that of the union much more difficult. So it is necessary that you exert yourself to find
reasons to persuade [them] that the union also suits the said [Cardinal] for the interests of France. I shall point out
some of them, and you are to use them as you judge them […]. Cardinal Richelieu is greedy for glory, and he will win no
less of it by joining the victorious arms of France to secure the Catholic religion than he did by carrying those same
arms to victory. His Eminence may be assured that whatever resolution he takes will not now be put down to weakness,
since everyone knows what the arms of France can do, free and victorious. With the peace that can follow the union, His
Eminence secures his own affairs, which in time of war will always be in danger. It is time that His Eminence began to
see how dangerous to France is the power of the Dutch, who are now beginning to think of great things and to turn their
[…] towards the Empires. Let him consider how well it suits the vast designs of that nation to extend their dominion
to the Mediterranean by acquiring a stronghold, and on how good a footing they can hope for it in an upheaval of the
Kingdom of France, to which it is so exposed while they have such forces by sea and land. Let His Eminence consider too
that the victory of the Swede is as formidable to France as to Germany. […] Even if matters with Monsieur are being
settled for the present, His Highness will always be the same, will always lend his ear to troubled counsels, and will
have people to whisper them to him; and an heir to the Kingdom cannot be held so tight that he is never free to escape
into the field. So, while there is fear of internal movements, the external ones must be settled, for they will
cause and feed the domestic ones. His Eminence has already reached such a degree of glory in matters of war that he
can rightly fear that fortune may turn; let him therefore seek to increase it by the arts of peace, and if he still
wants to pursue military affairs, let him direct things towards undertaking war against the infidels, for that is the
one part missing from His Eminence's glory. In short, the more the present circumstances work against your negotiation
of the union, the more you must think of finding reasons that will persuade him.

R84, 346-11, 18 Dec 1632

Barberini to Ceva, December 1632: use the victory over Gustavus to bring His Majesty to ease the treaty; the troubles in France made the French conclude the Valtellina peace; the union lies in the hands of France; Monsieur's flight, and the fear that rigour will keep France disunited and unable to help her allies. The 1632 decipherment on f. 136r (DECODE attachment DOC_R84_D1177) and the decode with Lasry's key read together.

taggio.
esterne violenze o almeno impotente a soccorrere i
suoi aleati.

# R84 — Cardinal Francesco Barberini to the nuncio Ceva, cipher of Rome, December 1632 (ASV SdS Francia 346, no. 11)

Rests on: the figures (`r84.retrans.txt`, re-transcribed from the images on 5 Oct 2026) decoded with Lasry's key and
the values adopted on 22-23 Oct 2026 (`b18_ceva_redecode.py` → `r84.read3.txt`), read against the **contemporary
decipherment on f. 136r** (`R84_decifrato_f136r.txt`; DECODE attachment DOC_R84_D1177, labelled "[cleartext]", never
opened before this re-read). Where the decipherer and the figures differ, the figures are followed (list below). Word
alignment: `python research/reading_audit/b18_ceva_check.py r84`. The cipher continues a sentence begun in clear on
the letter's first page ("ricordando a V.S. ..."). The covering letter of 11 Dec. 1632 on the same record (DOC_R84_D1176)
says "Scrivo a Mons. Bichi una cifra con ordine che trovandosi lei alla Corte serva per V.S.".
Spelling as the figures give it; a code's word in the decipherer's spelling.
Marks: [?word] partly carried, [word] supplied, […] unread, [NNN] unidentified code.

## Notes on the figures

- **Where the figures and f. 136r differ, the figures are followed**: "Vega V.S." (f. 136r reads like "Nega"),
  "gelosie" (f. 136r "gelosia"), "vol entrar" (f. 136r "vole"), "tengano" (f. 136r "tenghino"), "e sotoposta" (f. 136r
  "et").
- **Words carried by f. 136r alone** (code or garbled figures): Gostavo (844), S.M.tà (309 and 107), trattato (380),
  affari (`a 450`), Francesi (831), pace (`o 3` = 153, as in R75), Valtellina (397), fatto (451), Ella (`v c 9`),
molto (471), dalle (`de e`, twice: "dee gelosie", "dee inimicitie"), Re (170), Principi (110; also "quel Prencipe",
  110), altrimente dopo (`altri a e 931 po`), l'altro (`altmo`: 78 = m for r), l'unione (`l v osts 7`), N.S.re (`c 5`,
read uncertain in the decipherer's hand too), perche (485), negotiationi (`v 921`), et io non (`995 t V.S.`; the
  figures have a second V.S. here), Mons.r Nuntio (930, 957), sarà (`457 a`).
- 998 + a stray 3 is "nella" at all three places (ll. 21, 24, 27), as the decipherer reads it.
- The line "da questo nascere" is `QUESTA ndescere` in the decode (493 is questa/questo; `nd e sc` a slip for "nasc").

## Translation

… reminding Your Lordship to make use of the victory over Gustavus, though with your usual prudence, to induce His
Majesty to ease the treaty. And you should know that the affairs that were seething in France after my departure, and
the troubled designs of Monsieur too, were the reason the French concluded the peace of the Valtellina. Let Your
Lordship, who is on the spot, see whether the same causes are there now. You know very well that whoever wants to be
free of jealousy of the power of France tries to divide her, and the restless spirits of the Kingdom feed on the
commitments the King has with powerful Princes, and they stir more easily in the hope of support and diversion. To
settle and secure the affairs of the Kingdom it must free itself of external enmities, otherwise after one trouble the
next will arise. I can say that the union lies in the hands of France, if she will bring her claims to reasonable
terms. Nor need I tell you that he will do everything [?Our Lord] tells him, for you know that His Majesty does not wish
to enter into these matters; he will not cease, however, to go on easing the negotiations in the way that is hinted to
you, and I cannot tell Your Lordship more. By now you will have met the Nuncio, Monsignor, and will have learned from
him the state of the business and directed your own in the way that was needed. The flight of Monsieur is reported
everywhere. I do not know how wise it was to drive that Prince to despair with unaccustomed severity in France, since
from this consequences may arise that keep France disunited for a long time and exposed to violence from outside, or
at least unable to help her allies.
