Łaski’s cipher: four letters to the Dukes of Bavaria, 1529–1531

John Zápolya
fromJohn Zápolya
Louis X, Duke of Bavaria
toLouis X, Duke of Bavaria

Hieronymus Łaski and King John Zápolya wrote to the Bavarian court in one graphic cipher; its key was recovered from glosses written at the time over two of the letters and deciphers all four.

The letters
Hieronymus Łaski, King John Zápolya’s envoy, to a Bavarian duke (Buda, 24 November 1529), with a letter of King John to Duke Ludwig; Łaski to the dukes’ secretary (Kraków, 16 June 1530); a short note to the same secretary; and Łaski to a ducal councillor (Łask, 17 September 1531).
Where
Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv, Munich, Kurbayern Äußeres Archiv 4591 ff. 121–123, 226–228 and 264; DECODE R9322, R9323, R9417 (catalogue 161) and R9403 (catalogue 162), listed with no sender or recipient.
The cipher
One invented sign per letter, words separated, and a few signs for whole words: a large dagger for King John, a large X for Ferdinand. In the 1531 letter the signs for e and r are the other way round.
How it was deciphered
A clerk of the time wrote the plain text over parts of R9322 and R9417. The key was rebuilt from 153 of those word pairs and deciphers the unglossed lines and the other two letters.
What it says
The Sultan has left John the kingdom of Hungary without tribute and will return against Ferdinand unless there is a concord; Łaski asks the dukes to work for it in the Empire, and in 1531 reports the Sultan’s terms: no peace unless Hungary is left to King John.
Still open
The flower word sign, probably the king’s title; the owl word sign of R9417; two faint words of R9323; a few cramped signs.

Until 15 October 2026 these letters were split between two pages, each grouping the records of a DECODE catalogue entry. The other letters of those entries are different ciphers, each with its own page: the System A′ reports of 1534–35, the Wardein report of 1537, the King John letters in system L (with R9415 of 1533), the Fulda protest of 1576, R9367, R9416, R9424 and R9319.

01 The four letters

RecordFolioDateWhoWords deciphered
R9322121–122Buda, 24 Nov 1529f. 121 Łaski to a Bavarian duke, with a copy of his letter to Count Palatine Frederick; f. 122 King John to Duke Ludwig of Bavaria429 of 445 (96.4%)
R9417264Kraków, 16 June [1530]Łaski to the dukes’ secretary “Waisenfelder”217 of 219 (99.1%)
R9323123[1529–30]a note to the Bavarian secretary from Łaski’s circle124 of 163 (76.1%)
R9403226–228Łask, 17 Sept 1531Łaski to a councillor of the dukes (probably Leonhard von Eck; an inference)414 of 416 (99.5%)

The counts are words of the ciphered text; clear words are not counted. For R9322, R9417 and R9323 they are counted on the decodes made with the gloss key, where a recognisable word with a slipped letter counts as deciphered, so they are generous; R9403 was deciphered line by line. Measured on the words of the running readings (24 October 2026), R9403 reads at 99.1%; R9322 (87.7%), R9417 (92.8%) and R9323 (93.9%) build coherent sentences but stay under the 95% bar.

02 The key

The glosses give 153 cipher words with their plain words. Aligned sign by sign they fix 21 letter signs: 3 = i, x = e, circled cross = s, a flattened 2 = u/v, dotted circle = a, and so on (sysB/key_from_glosses.tsv). One sign, a w-shape, serves both c and t. Three larger signs stand alone for words: the dagger DAG is King John (“non alio loco vult habere [DAG] quam loco fratris sui”, said of the Sultan), the big X is Ferdinand (“concordiam inter [D] et [BIGX]” in R9323), and a four-lobed flower is probably the king’s title. In R9403 the starred x is e and the plain x is r, the reverse of the glossed letters, and some shapes differ; the raw decode of R9417’s first page shows the same exchange, so it is taken as a variant of the one key. A statistical check on the glossed words alone (a Latin letter model) passes: the glosses read far better than random keys or keys fitted to shuffled text.

03 Buda, 24 November 1529 (R9322)

Łaski writes that King John followed the dukes’ counsel. The Sultan, forced home by plague in his army, left John the kingdom of Hungary without tribute, with fifty guns and a thousand hundredweight of powder, and will come back next summer against Ferdinand’s lands unless there is a concord. A copy of the same news went to Count Palatine Frederick, the imperial captain. On f. 122, “Joannes Dei gratia rex Ungarie” tells Duke Ludwig that he is sending Lazarus the Jew as his envoy.

04 Kraków, 16 June 1530 (R9417), and the note R9323

Both letters were classed decoded, not read in the reading audit of 22 October 2026 and deciphered again on 23 October. R9417 was transcribed again sign by sign at the image: its transcription had stopped at line 21, leaving eight lines out, and had coded the two circle and two cross signs the other way round from the glossed lines. R9323 was re-read word by word (eleven transcription corrections; the first sign of line 3 is the Ferdinand sign). Both now give Latin sentences (sysB/R9417_reading.md, sysB/R9323_reading.md, with English; [D] is the dagger for King John, [BIGX] Ferdinand, [FLW] the flower sign, italics in the files mark the glossed words).

Łaski has the secretary’s letters of 12 June. The army had lain before Buda; a concord is best made through certain princes of the Empire; Nicolaus Min[?k]uics is being sent to the King of France. The Sultan has been persuaded, with great labour, to a truce for the year, and is ready to take into his friendship whomever King John names; unless there is a concord this year he will come out next summer with immense power by land and sea. Envoys should meet at Coburg in Saxony on 4 July. On the King of Poland’s daughter nothing is done, and through Sigismund Herberstein someone (the owl sign) is pressing for her to be given to the Count Palatine Frederick. The note R9323:

Ruffus brought the dukes’ letters on the 15th, and Łaski thanks them. The Sultan told Ferdinand’s envoys this winter that there would be no friendship, peace or truce unless Hungary was given up to King John. Ships, guns and grain are being carried to the Danube and soldiers levied. The diet of Speyer will be short; Łaski is ill but will ride post to it, and the dukes and their friends should stop any decision against the king until he arrives. On the marriage he cannot yet write: within ten days he will settle it with the King of Poland, “for among the Poles, as among the French, the dowering of kings’ daughters is fixed by law.” Postscript: the councillor should put the king’s letters before the imperial estates. The docket says “anno 32”; the text is dated 1531.

Translation (Claude Opus 5.5, 23 Oct 2026) of `sysB/R9322_reading.md`. Same holes: `[?word]` an emended or doubtful
word (translated as `[?word]`), `[?]` a doubtful sign, `[...]` a run that makes no word, `x[y]z` a supplied letter.
`[D]`, `[F]`, `[X]` are name signs without a value; by context [D] and [F] are King John Zápolya, [X] Ferdinand.
f. 121 is Hieronymus Łaski's letter (with the note that it is a copy of his letter to Count Palatine Frederick);
f. 122 is King John's letter for Lazarus the Jew, whose date and signature lines do not resolve. Latin.

## Translation

It cannot be said, most illustrious prince and my most respected lord, how welcome to [D] were the counsels of Your
Most Illustrious Lordship, for which [F] gives Your Most Illustrious Lordship great thanks; and in all things His
Majesty has followed the counsels of Your Lordship, for His Majesty has written to Duke [?Frederick], captain of the
Roman Empire, [?all] that Your Lordship [?advised]. And let Your Most Illustrious Lordship know tha[t] [F] is inclined
and ready for all things whatsoever [?may] regard the [h]onour, dignity and advantage of Your Lordship, and counts you
among his first and dearest friends.

This is the news: the Emperor of the Turks, having done the ninth service [X], not so much because of the winter,
although this too somewhat harmed our affairs, but more because of the plague, which raged wonderfully in the
Emperor's army, the Emperor was forced to return to his dominions; where, in this [?his] return, he left to the Royal
Majesty the kingdom of H[u]ngary with all that belongs to it; he left fifty guns and one thousand hundredweight of
powder; besides, he has ordered as many troops as will be necessary, for since we can have troops from nowhere else,
we must use those we can, especially as we [?have] the Emperor himself so favourable to us, who wishes to hold [D] in
no other place than in the place of his brother, which he has now sufficiently declared in giving this kingdom to His
Majesty without any tribute, without any conditions. And now, indeed, all this time the Emperor was waiting for [?],
who challenged the Emperor to battle, promising that he would come to meet him; but unless in the meantime there is
concord between [D] and [X], he said that he would come next summer, but somewhat earlier and with far other
preparation, to attack the dominions of [X], than he had come to preserve [them], to join hands with him; whereupon,
just as Your Most Illustrious Lordship has now suffered nothing [...] in us his, so neither in fu[?]ture will you have
anything to fear, nor anyone else, provided they have not given help to [X]. Of me, indeed, let Your Most Illustrious
Lordship be persuaded that I am and wish to be your [?new] servant, Your Most Illustri[?]ous Lordship's, to whom I
commend myself most diligently and from the heart. Buda, the twenty-fourth of November in the year one thousand five
hundred and twenty-nine. This is the copy of the letter to the most illustrious lord Frederick, captain of the Empire.
Your Most Illustrious Lord[?]ship's [?servant] Hieronymus de Lasco wrote.

[?John], by the [?grace] [?of God] [?King] of Hungary, etc. To the most illustrious prince, lord Louis, Duke [?of
Bavaria], [our] brother and dearest friend. Most illustrious prince, [?our] dearest brother and friend, [...]
[?conversation] with the [?]bearer of these presents, Lazarus the Jew, messenger to Your Lordship, to whom we have
ourselves entrusted some things to be reported to Your Lordship in our name; [?therefore] we ask that you be pleased
to [?give] him all credence when he speaks in our name, and whatever you [?learn] there to pertain to [?our] affair,
that you be pleased to make it known [?to us] through the same messenger as soon[?] as possible, out of your love for
us; and we, for what you do, [...]. Given [?at Buda], [?the day after] [...] [?in the year] [?one thousand] five
hundred and twenty-nine. [...] wrote.

R9417, f. 264, Kraków 16 June [1530] read in part

Łaski to the dukes' secretary Waisenfelder, Kraków 16 June [1530]: concord best made through the imperial princes; Nicolaus Minkuics sent to the King of France and to meet the dukes' envoys at Coburg on 4 July (the roads were beset); the Sultan, persuaded to a year's truce, will receive whom King John names and will come next summer by land and sea unless there is concord; the King of Poland's daughter: the match starts coldly while someone presses through Sigismund Herberstein for Frederick the Count Palatine; the dukes should send to Charles V to hold back his brother from attacking King John. Signed 'Lask', in his own hand.

Builds coherent sentences, but under the read bar of 95% of words read as sense (93% here); the holes are marked in the reading.

## Translation

Dearest Herr Waisenfelder, I have your letter dated the twelfth of this month, in which (he) wished to [?excuse] his most illustrious princes and himself for neglect in the matter of the army that besieged [?King] [King John] at Buda; in which he also urges that concord cannot be brought about more conveniently than through certain princes of the Empire, to whom your lords too should be joined. On this matter I have already written to [King John]; but because Lord Nicolaus Min[?k]uics is now being sent to the King of France and to others, it was necessary to send the bearer of the present letter, [?a Jew], to [?you].

First, [King John] wishes [...] the princes to be content to stay at peace when the Duke [?of Württemberg] [?strives] to recover his dominion, and he asks this earnestly.

The Emperor of the Turks has been persuaded, by my great labours, to a truce of a year; he is ready [sic: "paratur"] to take into his friendship and alliance all whom [King John] names and commends to him; and unless there is concord this year, he will come out next summer with unspeakable power by land and sea, which [...] I will write at another time. Yet your princes need not fear, for we will take care in time.

It would be most necessary that you be appointed to the fourth day of July at Coburg in Saxony, for Min[?k]uics will certainly be there. That he could not meet you earlier as he had written was not his fault: the roads were so beset that he could in no way get through. But it is necessary that he go.

About the King of Poland's daughter, I wonder that nothing is being done, since the King of Poland had already declared he would give her, and I suspect some ill will, because this business begins so coldly. So [...] it must be: let something be done quickly, for [owl] too is now soliciting, through Sigismund Herberstein, who is here, that she be given to Frederick the Count Palatine. So quick action is needed, lest another snatch away the best and richest prize, etc.

Your princes, together with others, ought to send to Charles [?the Emperor] so that he holds back his brother from attacking [King John], because the King of Poland, the King of France and the other Christian princes will send. Finally, I wish to be most warmly commended to your princes, to whom I offer myself and all I have, etc. Kraków, the sixteenth day of June. Łask[i]. Written in his own hand.

R9323, f. 123, [1529-30] read in part

Latin note from Łaski's circle to the Bavarian secretary: [FLW] loves the Duke of Bavaria; Łaski wants concord between King John and Ferdinand, for without it Bohemia will perish and the Turks will consume it and Austria; the other princes' lands have nothing to fear by his pact with the Turk unless the Imperial estates aid Ferdinand against [FLW]; the Turks are not to be despised; he would have sent horses to the Sultan; commends himself to the dukes.

Builds coherent sentences, but under the read bar of 95% of words read as sense (94% here); the holes are marked in the reading.

## Translation

Dearest Lord Secretary, know that [FLW] loves the Duke of Bavaria most sincerely and is willing to do everything for them; but I greatly desire concord between [King John] and [Ferdinand], for it is certain that if there is no concord Bohemia will perish, which the Turks will consume as they will Austria. The lands of the other princes, however, [?fear] nothing, because I have made such a pact with the Turk, unless perhaps the estates of the Empire alone want the Turk's hostility by giving aid to Ferdinand against [FLW]. So let your princes and the whole Empire take care not to stir up the Turks against themselves; nor are the Turks [?to be despised], for few know their power and their cunning. I would most gladly have sent horses to the Turkish prince, [?common] to us, but [...] would not take them. May your lordship commend me to his princes, for I am assuredly their servant.

R9403, ff. 226-228, Łask 17 Sept 1531

Łaski to a councillor of the Bavarian dukes, 17 Sept 1531: the Sultan told Ferdinand's envoys there would be no peace or truce unless Hungary is given up to King John, and is preparing ships, guns and grain on the Danube; Łaski will ride to the Speyer diet and asks the dukes to stop any decision against the king; the royal marriage will be settled with the King of Poland.

Noble and excellent lord, dearest friend, greeting and my commendation. On the fifteenth of this month Ruffus brought
me his letters; how welcome they were first to [DAG = King John], and then therefore all that they contained in his
letters was understood, and abundantly. Whereas Your Lordship promises me the favour of your princes and declares the
goodwill of Their Most Illustrious Lordships towards me, it cheers and gladdens me with great joy, as one who from my
earliest age has always wished and sought nothing more than to win for myself the grace and favour of princes and
great men; and that very thing I shall do with all zeal, now and always hereafter, and I shall serve the most
illustrious princes of Your Lordship with my person and all my means.

For the rest, where the most illustrious princes desire to understand what the Turk has in mind and whither he intends
to move with his army, Their Most Illustrious Lordships can easily understand this, since this winter the Turk gave
King Ferdinand's envoys this answer: "Item, say to your lord that he will never obtain our friendship, never peace
[peace] or truce, unless he gives up the kingdom of Hungary to our friend the most serene King John; and if he does not
do that, I shall come to seek him out, and I shall not trouble to storm cities, for God has given us very great and
very ample cities in our empires, following to make imperial and military battle and to destroy his provinces." From
this the most illustrious princes can judge that the Turk will by no means give up this expedition if there is no
concord.

But now with him warlike preparation is being made with unspeakable fury: ships without number, guns, grain and
victuals are being gathered and carried to the Danube, and a levy of soldiers is being made.

That this diet of Speyer is to be so short I much regret; yet as soon as, after this most severe illness of mine, I
have some strength again, I shall hasten to the diet itself by post. [?]orator to His Imperial Majesty and the
estates of the Empire; wherefore my [?]… asks the most illustrious princes, together with their other friends, to
prevent anything being decreed against him until I come. For [DAG = the King] has in the whole Empire, among all the
princes, none in whom he trusts more, and whom he is more eager and desirous to gratify in very deed, than the princes
of Your Lordship; which is undoubtedly so, and for which I shall be surety.

Of the marriage I do not know what to write; yet within ten days I shall be settled with the most serene King of
Poland, and whatever I achieve I shall declare at Speyer. For among the Poles, as among the French, there is provision
by law concerning the dowering of kings' daughters. Of these and other matters we shall treat more fully when we are at
Speyer. Meanwhile I commend myself heartily to the most illustrious princes, whose servant I am and shall be; may Your
Lordship too hold me commended. Given the seventeenth of September in the year [fifteen hundred and] thirty-one,
Łaski. He wrote.

I ask most earnestly that Your Lordship may in some way present these letters of [DAG = the King] to the estates of
the Empire.
