The letter
Gaspar de Guzmán, Count-Duke of Olivares, to Antonio Álvarez de Toledo, 5th Duke of Alba, then viceroy of Naples; Madrid, 22 August 1626. Wholly in cipher except the closing, the dateline and the signature. A covering letter in clear of the same day (f. 11r) refers to it.
Where
Biblioteca Nacional de España, MSS/10249 (“Papeles varios”, Osuna; BDH bdh0000042230), ff. 13r–15r. DECODE R1190 lists the letter as “Decrypted”, but no decipherment or key is attached there.
The cipher
Philip IV’s general cipher A: a homophonic syllabary of letter groups, numbers for letters and syllables, special signs and a nomenclator (fro = Dios, 199 = hija).
How it was deciphered
The key K6A, rebuilt from the Santa Cruz pairs of 1630–32 (Santa Cruz 1630), reads the first part. Twenty values learnt there only were added, the key was frozen, and then it was measured once on the held-out part.
What it says
The deaths of a young Guzmán nephew and of his daughter María after a stillbirth; he keeps her widower Ramiro Núñez de Guzmán, Marquis of Toral, as son and heir, with the dukedom of Medina de las Torres and the office of sumiller de corps.
Still open
The key is partial by the project’s protocol (0.506 against 0.144, under the 0.60 threshold). Thirteen codes have no value, and about 54 line ends are lost in the gutter.
Credit
Brice Dudout (Europe chiffrée), with Claude Opus 5.5 agents, dated and identified the letter, extended the key, transcribed and read it. DECODE R1190 is credited as prior work, without a decipherment.

01 The letter

The letter belongs to the summer of 1626, when Olivares lost a nephew meant for the Church and then his only daughter, María, who died after a stillbirth. He writes to the Duke of Alba that he keeps her widower, Ramiro Núñez de Guzmán, Marquis of Toral, as son and heir of his house: the dukedom of Medina de las Torres on the commandery of Caravaca, granted by the King at the marriage, and the office of sumiller de corps, which the King gave Ramiro of his own motion in Barcelona. He offers his life to the King’s service and hopes the Duke his son will behave wisely. The facts agree with the known chronology.

The lead (no. 1273) was catalogued as undated; the covering letter in clear fixes it at 22 August 1626. DECODE R1190 has the same letter with the status “Decrypted”. We checked the record: it holds three images, an empty documents list, no transcription, no key and no decipherer. Where the status comes from is unknown. If an earlier reading turns up, the credit here becomes verification rather than solution.

02 The key and its test

K6A is a homophonic syllabary (fer = de, xer = me, fan = que, pon = co) with numbers and a nomenclator. The first part of the letter (ff. 13r–14v, line 17) was transcribed and read, 20 values were added from it alone (for example hija for 199, ll for c‡), and the key was frozen by SHA-256 before the rest was transcribed.

The held-out part (f. 14v.21–27 and f. 15r, 542 tokens, 20.7%) was measured once. With no contemporary decipherment, the measure is the share of decoded letters covered by Spanish words of five letters or more: 0.506, against 0.144 for the best of 200 keys shuffled within length classes. The criterion fixed in advance was at least 0.60 and a margin of 0.30. The margin is met (0.362), the threshold is not, so the key is partial. The ceiling is about 0.64: a perfect contemporary plaintext of the same series scores 0.636. Nine code tokens of the held-out part have no value and each cuts a segment.

03 The reading

The reading was made after the measurement and counted by script on the marked text. Of 1,001 words, 906 are certain, 47 probable, 13 restored and 35 unresolved: 953 read without restorations, 95.2%. A blind proof-reading of 13 sign forms, answered by Brice Dudout and fixed in advance, settled hol = Su Majestad, gli = buena, pr = for and the two forms of “t”. The three “hol” of the held-out part were then read “Su Majestad” by the value established outside it; this is a reading decision only, and without them the count is 94.9%. The Spanish and an English translation are under Full texts.

Olivares to the Duke of Alba, Madrid, 22 August 1626 (BNE MSS/10249 ff. 13r-15r)

Olivares tells the Duke of Alba of his griefs of summer 1626: the death of a young Guzmán nephew meant for the Church; his daughter María's stillbirth, her recovery, then her death; her virtue. He keeps her widower Ramiro, Marquis of Toral, as son and heir of his house: the dukedom of Medina de las Torres on the commandery of Caravaca, the office of sumiller de corps given by the King of his own motion; he puts his life in the King's service and hopes the Duke his son will behave wisely.

## Count

1001 words: 906 certain, 47 probable, 13 restored, 35 unresolved; read without restorations (certain + probable) 953/1001 = 95.2% -> read (Daniel's rule).
About 54 line ends lost in the gutter (ff. 13v, 14v) are not counted.

The three "hol" of the held-out part H (f14v.21, f15r.02, f15r.07) are read {S.M.} by the value established outside H (blind proof-reading O13, f14r.25 and f14v.09, with the reference form f14v.19 in the buffer): a reading decision made after the measurement, counted as probable, not a change of the measured key.

‹…› = unresolved word; … = words lost in the gutter (ff. 13v, 14v); [x] = word restored or supplied for the sense. "His Majesty" stands for the code "hol" (probable). The translation follows the reading page by page; where the gutter cuts a line, the sentence is given in fragments.

**f. 13r.** I have had much to offer to God these days, almost all the causes of grief that I can fear as a father and as master of my house having come upon me together. ‹…› de Guzmán, my nephew, died, a youth of ‹…› years [who] ‹…› in his gifts and in the promise he showed, and the one I had chosen to serve the King and the Church in that dignity. In my grief at this blow, which was in my ‹…› ‹…› the cause and the qualities, God prepared me, not without particular providence, for another, incomparably greater, with which He was to try me. A few days later my daughter María had a bad delivery, in which she lost a granddaughter who would have been a comfort to me for the continuation of my posterity, and ‹…›. The tears for this mishap were dried by the recovery of her mother: she having [come through] ‹…› dangers, the pleasure of seeing her well was enough to console me. But as María's virtue and her good inclination drew her towards what she now enjoys, and since she had the use of reason she strove to deserve it, and in the married state she excelled in love for her husband and in the ‹…› of all her qualities, God chose

**f. 13v.** to give her the reward in advance ‹…› … when we imagined her in better health … my spirit gave way to grief, and the strength of the … could suspend the feeling and … new light to reason, to consider that … such [blows], if they come as punishment, are deserved …, and if by a higher providence, they must be venerated. And so, when there came before me my … the grief of the countess, the loss …, the forlorn state of the Marquis, and the grief of everyone, which even among … strangers has been great, I sought to offer to God what came from His hand, and to give … my part; and I judged as the first … for the Marquis, who, having been my daughter's husband, … his fortune so changed, moved … the most pitiless to compassion … that I had chosen this Ramiro … his blood and his person, which … is lovable, to make him master of my house … of all that they have deserved and are … my ‹…› and cares, I have found him … in the King's service most loyal and intelligent … as far as I have tried him, and of capacity … [with] greater signs he loved my daughter and respected the … heart, and he knew how to win her so much that, having … ordered the viaticum to be given her in the [extremity] … from which she was recovering, she said afterwards …

**f. 14r.** with anguish, goes to see ‹…› that this poor Ramiro gave. The countess and I owe him love and respect, [he having treated us] with the humility and submission of a son, … who has put our reputation and our advice before the ‹…› licence that prosperity tends to allow. It is clear to me that if María, as God took her, forgetting all things here below (a reward that ‹…› her virtue, and how little it had turned her head), had remembered anything or had had time to dispose of it, it would have been her husband to whom she left all she could, and in whom she would have wished all I have, and that in ‹…› that moment she would have asked it of me tenderly. I saw the Marquis reduced to a state that imagination could not foresee, and his fortune so undone in an instant that little would not suffice to repair it, and great demonstrations were needed, since even the greatest did not match that for which I chose him; and afterwards the love grew, and the qualities by which he knew how to deserve us. The impossibility grieved me; the countess felt the same; my own spirit urged me; such reasonable tokens of devotion approved ‹…› ‹…› of fitting ‹…› ‹…› that they had to be great. The clemency of His Majesty (God keep him) encouraged it: he had granted me the favour, when I arranged María's marriage, ‹…› of the dukedom of Medina de las Torres on the commandery of
