- The letters
- Letters of Filippo Acciaiuoli, nuncio in Lisbon, and of the abbé Testa, 1757–61; eight cipher leaves.
- Where
- Portogallo 117. DECODE has the eight leaves, transcribed digit by digit in 2016–17, and kept them “partially decrypted”.
- The cipher
- Two-digit homophones, the digit 6 a null, and four-digit code words that all begin with 2.
- How it was read
- Lasry’s 2020 key and code-group decryption gave no Italian. Three leaves (10, 24, 31 October 1758) carry the Secretariat’s clear decipherment; lined up with the cipher it fixes 25 code words, and the other five leaves then read as running Italian.
- What it says
- On 12 September 1758 the nuncio reported that the king, coming back by night from a lady, had been fired on in his calesse and wounded in the right arm. Later letters follow the wound, the Jesuits and the 1760 marriage of the Princess of Brazil.
- Still open
- About eighty code groups that occur only once or twice, and a few passages in the two long leaves where the transcription has slipped.
- Credit
- George Lasry reconstructed the key in 2020.

01 The documents and the key
The volume is “Lettere di mons. Acciaiuoli, nunzio in Portugallo, e dell’abbate Testa, 1757–1761”, ff. 2–585. DECODE dates all eight records 18 January 1757, which is the first date in the volume. The cipher leaves themselves run from 12 September 1758 to 1760:
| Item | DECODE | Folio | Date | Digits | Clear on the leaf |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 117/1 | R25 | 95r–v | 12 Sept 1758 | 1918 | no |
| 117/2 | R195 | 98r | 19 Sept 1758 | 860 | no |

“Clear on the leaf” means the decipherment written above the figures. The Secretariat’s separate clear decipherments of R25 (ff. 90r–91r), R195 (f. 94r), R196 (f. 97r), R200 (ff. 108r–109r, second copy ff. 110r–111r) and R201 (f. 161, second text f. 162) are among the DECODE attachments of the records, with working drafts; they also give the dates of R195, R200 and R201.
The key is Lasry’s reconstruction (DECODE, 24 October 2020). Letters and common syllables have fixed two-digit homophones: a 04 38 55, e 84, i 08 53, o 81, s 88, il 43 91, che 39, non 14, de 71 78, qu 70 87 90. The digit 6 is a null, scattered freely, and the code words are four digits beginning with 2. No two-digit element begins with 2 or contains a 6, so the figures cut up only one way.
02 The code words
Lasry left every four-digit group open. The decipherments on 117/4–6 give them word for word:
| Code | Reading | Code | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2759, 2774 | Re | 2777 | Re (of Spain) |
| 2778 | Regina | 2813 | Spagna |
| 2300, 2845 | tutto | 2899 | giorno |
| 2171 | molto | 2510 | lettere |
| 2538 | ministri | 2799 | ministro |
| 2354 | Camera | 2138 | avuto |
| 2533 | materia | 2153 | fatto |
| 2315 | altri | 2518 | maggiore |
| 2188 | quello | 2140 | benché |
| 2134 | assai | 2178 | e che |
| 2395 | contrario | 2177 | onde |
| 2189 | egli | 2407 | detto |
The clear decipherments of the other five letters give many more, consistent across the letters: 2740 prim-, 2530 Marchese/Marchesa (guessed as chirurgo in September), 2394 Conte, 2743 Principessa, 2803 Segretario, 2823 Sua Maestà, 2189 quest-, 2378 Città, 2398 Corte, 2817 Stato and others; the word lists are in the reading files. Lasry’s table gives 03 as nel; the decipherments show it is per (“per tutta la Città”).
03 The attempt on the king, 12 September 1758
The first leaf (117/1, R25) is the longest. The reading follows the Secretariat’s clear decipherment (“Decif. li 11 Ottobre”), aligned word by word with the key decode of the figures; [?word] marks a word the decipherer wrote that the figures as transcribed do not confirm.
“…it is told that the King, coming back from a visit to a Lady (about whom, for this reason, people have been talking for years) in a calash with Pedro Teixeira, [?Vilasso], his favourite valet (for that reason Knight of the Order of Christ and under-equerry), three musket shots were fired at the calash, by which the postilion and the mule of the leader he was riding were badly wounded; Teixeira was wounded to death (it was said on Sunday that he had received the sacraments), and the King had several wounds in the right arm. … The Lady is of the first families, sister of the Marquis of Távora who was Viceroy of the Indies, married to his eldest son. It is said that the blow comes from her relatives, or from enemies of Teixeira, who is believed to be the governor [of the King] in the chair. The fact is not doubted.” The Marquis of Angeja, the King’s confidant, then took the King to the Real Barraca. This is the attempt of the night of 3 September 1758, which Carvalho turned two months later into the arrest of the Távoras and the Duke of Aveiro and, in 1759, their execution at Belém.
04 The wound, September–October 1758
117/2 (R195, 19 Sept). The illness is the public story; the king is now said to have come not from the Marchioness but from “altra donna non nobile”. The arm is said to be broken. The Queen “non muterà cosa alcuna, poiché non ha da durare”, and the fleets held back for a year by the Secretary’s negligence are made to sail, “con danno del Re, e de' mercanti, e de' poveri capitani”. 117/3 (R196, 26 Sept). “Continua la pubblica voce sulla causa del male del Re, che da nessuno più si dubita, e ciascuno se ne persuade dal sentire, che ancora Sua Maestà resta per tutto il giorno a letto: Molti certo lo vedono, ma nessuno vede il braccio, che è fasciato.”
117/4 (R197, 10 Oct). Deciphered at the time: “Il Rè si è levato, ma mai [esce] tutto il giorno.
Barbara of Braganza, Queen of Spain and José’s sister, had died on 27 August 1758. The widowed Ferdinand VI did not marry Maria Francisca.
117/5 (R198, 31 Oct), deciphered at the time: the king has not had erysipelas, “ma un sacco di materia, che ha fatto la piaga”, with fever as a result. The king is very apprehensive; “il credere il male maggiore di quello, che si dice” is universal.
05 Carvalho, November 1758, and the marriage question, 1760
117/7 (R200, 28 Nov 1758) is the longest leaf; its cipher is crowded and much corrected, and the reading follows the Secretariat’s decipherment of 28 December, checked against a second copy and the draft. The Jesuits’ affair: the city is for them, but nobody dares speak. “La passione è tutta del Segretario de Carvalho, che veramente è dispotico, né ha chi gli resista, e pubblicamente si dice che il Re di Portogallo ne ha paura.” The Cardinal Patriarch trembles before him; the expulsion of Father Torres, the nuncio’s confessor, is “un altro motivo di diffidenza meco”.
117/8 (R201, 12 Feb 1760) is about the succession. The British ambassador is said to have no other errand than to thwart a marriage of the Princess of Brazil to the Infante Don Luis of Spain, and the Conde d’Oeiras (Carvalho) confers often with the Spanish ambassador; others think the king means her for Don Antonio, eldest of his legitimised brothers. The court of London “è molto allarmata” and fears for its trade from “uno della Casa di Spagna e di Borbone sul trono di Portogallo”. The letter ends: “Il paese freme, che vorrebbe la Principessa unita coll'Infante Don Pietro.” She married her uncle Pedro on 6 June 1760. Acciaiuoli was expelled from Portugal nine days later.
06 Method
The DECODE records were fetched with a logged-in session: images, the NiLan/Midas digit transcriptions, Lasry’s key and his
decryption, which is one file attached to every record. The decryption was flattened into one letter string per leaf and split
into Italian words by hand. Code words were fixed by aligning the three clear decipherments with the cipher below them, and
then checked for consistency wherever the same code recurs in the other five leaves (2759 Re 11 times, 2300 tutto 12).
The September working text, leaf by leaf, is targets/acciaiuoli1757/READING.md.
The reading audit of 22 October 2026 asked whether each letter builds sentences that can be translated. Four (R25, R195,
R200, R201) did not: an open code broke almost every sentence. The same day the png attachments on their DECODE records, filed as
“key and work images”, turned out to be the Secretariat’s clear decipherments and drafts. They were transcribed and aligned word by
word with the key decode (texts/R*_align.tsv): in R25, 205 of 288 clear words are carried letter by letter by the figures and
53 by code groups whose values hold across the letters; the rest fall where DECODE’s digit transcription is garbled, and none is
contradicted by the figures. R196’s decipherment (f. 97r) was transcribed on 23 October and agrees with the decode clause by clause.
The readings and English translations are texts/R*_reading.md and texts/R*_en.md.
07 What remains open
- Code 2339 in R200: the decipherer left “l’Ambasciatore di . . .” blank; the draft has “di Spagna”, read as [?Spagna].
- Words the decipherer wrote that the figures as transcribed do not confirm, marked [?] in the readings: “Vilasso” in R25, “solamente assicurato” and “della gente di quei paesi” in R195; DECODE’s digit transcription is garbled at those places.
- Code groups of R196 outside its decipherment’s wording.
- Grades: codes from the decipherments on the leaves and from the Secretariat’s separate decipherments are H; the word division of the letters follows those decipherments.
- The rest of Portogallo 117 (ff. 2–585) has more cipher than these eight leaves. It is not on DECODE and was not seen.

117/1 = R25, ff. 95r-95v, 12 Sept 1758
The nuncio's secret account of the attempt of 3 Sept 1758 on José I: coming back from a lady "delle prime famiglie" (the young Marchioness of Távora), the king was fired on in his calesse, his valet and favourite Pedro Teixeira badly wounded and the king hit in the right arm. The blow was thought to come from her relatives or from Teixeira's enemies.

<!-- English translation of texts/R25_reading.md (Claude Opus 5.5, 22 Oct 2026). --> # R25, Acciaiuoli to the Secretariat of State, Lisbon, 12 Sept 1758 In the despatch I explain the King of Portugal's illness and the cause given for it; but the whole city holds that it is not the true one, and it is told that the King, coming back from a visit to a Lady (about whom, for this reason, people have been talking for years) in a calash with Pedro Teixeira, [?Vilasso], his favourite valet (for that reason Knight of the Order of Christ and under-equerry), three musket shots were fired at the calash, by which the postilion and the mule of the leader he was riding were badly wounded; Teixeira was wounded to death (it was said on Sunday that he had received the sacraments), and the King had several wounds in the right arm. And with a single mule, having called the Marquis of Angeja, the King's confidant, to his help, passing by his house and leaving Teixeira there, following the mule, the said Marquis took the King to the Real Barraca, not without much noise. The matter is delicate, but having become public in the mouth of every commoner, I thought I should inform Your Eminence, so that it should not be told you from another quarter. The Lady is of the first families, sister of the Marquis of Távora who was Viceroy of the Indies, married to his eldest son. It is said that the blow comes from her relatives, or from enemies of Teixeira, who is believed to be the governor [of the King] in the chair. The fact is not doubted. It is held that, struck in the bone, the King's arm is broken, and that therefore, being unable to sign for a long time, he has entrusted the government to the Queen, as in the despatch. The Infante Don Manuel spoke of it to me with the suspicion of the others. The ministers and courtiers say what I report in the letter in clear; nor can I report more for now.
117/2 = R195, f. 98r, Sept 1758
The public version of the king's injury is illness; the arm is said to be broken. Fleets and ships are held back, to the merchants' loss.

## Reading
## Notes
- Against the decode (texts/R196_decryption.md): every clause is in the figures. Code values confirmed by the
decipherment: 2754 pubblic-, 2131 ancora, 2823 Sua Maestà (twice), 2141 come, 2349 avvis-, 2907 due, 2189 quest-;
2530 is Marchesa (the 19 Sept "chirurgo" was a guess); 03 is per ("nel sua de" = "per-suade", "restò nel tutto" =
"resta per tutto"); "a dito vora" is "di Tavora" with slips in the digit transcription.
- The decode has "Molto è certo" where the decipherer wrote "Molti certo"; the decipherment is followed.
- The working draft (DOC_R196_D1450, f. 98r) reads "ma soli Cerusici", "due" struck; the fair copy has "due".Translation
<!-- English translation of texts/R196_reading.md (Claude Opus 5.5, 23 Oct 2026). --> # R196, Acciaiuoli to the Secretariat of State, Lisbon, 26 Sept 1758 The public talk about the cause of the King's illness goes on; nobody doubts it any more, and everyone is persuaded of it on hearing that His Majesty still stays in bed all day. Many indeed see him, but nobody sees the arm, which is bandaged. Everyone now believes that His Majesty was not coming from the Marchioness of Távora, but from another place, as I reported. It is said that the arm will remain impaired, but two surgeons see him. This is the common talk.

In the letters in clear I say what the Ministers and the Gentlemen of the Chamber tell us; but it is held that the
King did not have erysipelas, but an abscess of matter, which made the wound that causes much concern, and the fever
came as a consequence. The King is in great apprehension, and others who see him have been noticed to be in low
spirits. The belief that the illness is worse than is said is, one must confess, universal; but for certain I have

Although the King is said to be much better, it is held that the arm will certainly remain impaired. A confidant of
his, speaking with the King about the death of the Queen [of Spain], the King said to him: she was a good sister, and
I am sure that the King will marry my daughter Maria Francisca, and that he promised it to the Queen before she died.
What the Spanish Minister shows is the very opposite, so I cannot judge whether it is true or a flattering hope with
which he and his Ministers keep him calm. That the King said this in confidence is quite true; for all the rest I
cannot commit myself.117/7 = R200, ff. 115r-115v, 28 [Nov?] 1758

# R200, Acciaiuoli to the Secretariat of State, Lisbon, 28 Nov 1758 (ff. 115r-115v)
parlava molto, e sempre a lungo; ne parla ora molto meno.

<!-- English translation of texts/R200_reading.md (Claude Opus 5.5, 22 Oct 2026). --> # R200, Acciaiuoli to the Secretariat of State, Lisbon, 28 Nov 1758 The affair of the Jesuits is in the state I describe in the letters in clear. The whole city is for them: the first is the Infante Don Pedro, followed by the Princesses and almost the whole court; but neither the first nor anyone else dares to speak. The passion is all the Secretary de Carvalho's, who is truly despotic, and there is no one to resist him; and it is said openly that the King of Portugal is afraid of him. Before, he spoke of it for whole hours at a time without anyone being able to interrupt him, and the Ambassador of [?Spain] and the Emperor's Minister have told me in confidence that he also spoke of it with them a great deal and always at length; now he speaks of it much less. In the city no one dares to talk about it; in confidence, though, everyone calls it violence. With me, besides the long outburst he made to me, which I reported in clear, not only does he no longer speak of it, but when I deliberately brought it into the conversation he avoids it; as does the Cardinal too, who trembles before him and depends on him in everything. And this behaviour began with the suspension of the Fathers from confession and preaching made by the late Patriarch, when I spoke of it with Cardinal Saldanha the same evening, as I have already reported. I fear that that Minister there and the Dominican who accompanied Signor Carvalho's son to Rome may write nonsense and falsehoods to help. The expulsion of Father Torres, carried out without telling me beforehand, is another reason for distrust towards me and for confusion in the Cardinal. A lay brother dismissed from the Society by the said Father Torres, then my confessor, has for two or three years been at Carvalho's all day; he is the one who supplies information, and with it he stokes the whole fire. He was very well informed, having been an official of the sale of the goods from India that are sold here. This is the key to the present state of the affair, which I am persuaded, with many others, they would like, with honour, if it were possible, to withdraw from many steps taken, which are recognised as irregular. The Cardinal is at school and carries out the precepts of the said Signor, without ever answering back, let alone opposing.

# R201, Cardinal Acciaiuoli to the Secretariat of State, Lisbon, 12 Feb 1760 (f. 280r)

<!-- English translation of texts/R201_reading.md (Claude Opus 5.5, 22 Oct 2026). --> # R201, Cardinal Acciaiuoli to the Secretariat of State, Lisbon, 12 Feb 1760 The talk is becoming general at court and in the city that this English Ambassador has no other commission than to upset the marriage, the treaty for which is said to be well advanced, between this Princess of Brazil and the Infante Don Luis of Spain. Frequent conferences are seen between the Count of Oeiras and the Count of Masseda, Ambassador of Spain, with attentions from the first to the second that seem affected to everyone. Some on the contrary will have it that the King of Portugal, with the said Count of Oeiras, is not thinking of such a marriage, but rather of giving the Princess to Don Antonio, the eldest of His Majesty's three legitimised brothers, who in fact only this year, on the pretext of hunting, is staying at Salvaterra against custom, his brother the Inquisitor not even having been there. This now makes many talk, especially among the ministers of the princes, who are doing everything to find out what it really is. The English Ambassador will speak in appearance for the commerce that is harmed, but in substance the court of London is much alarmed, because it fears its own loss, particularly in commerce, from one of the House of Spain and of Bourbon on the throne of Portugal, given past times with Spain and past and present times with France. The country is seething; it would like the Princess united with the Infante Don Pedro.
