- The letter
- Alfonso II d’Este, duke of Ferrara, to his agent at Venice, 14 April 1576, on cc. 76–77. A later note on c. 77r reads “A Monsig.r Ariosti Ambasciatore / Venezia”, which agrees with the catalogue but is later testimony.
- Where
- Biblioteca Estense Universitaria, Modena, Autografoteca Campori, Lettera E, Este (d’), Alfonso II d’Este, cc. 76–77. Catalogue item 1566 (it holds three letters in three systems; the 1559 letter has its own folder).
- The cipher
- A simple substitution of Italian with 20 signs and nulls: x, y and k freely, and & and 3 once each. The digit 7 stands for itself once. There are no word breaks and no code groups. Two hands write it, the second with far fewer nulls.
- How it was deciphered
- A quadgram search on period Italian with no crib; 8 of 10 restarts reached the same solution. No decipherment stands on the leaves.
- What it says
- The duke tells his agent how to handle a man who fears stricter proceedings: he was never in Este pay, Ferrara cannot shelter him, and he is to get fifty scudi. A second hand turns to oils and almonds, a Roman complaint and the prisoners of Rovigo.
- Still open
- “Read” rests on three words of margin: 706 of 740 words (95.4%) have no restored or changed letter, against a bar of 703. No human palaeographer checked it, and the images were not seen here.
- Credit
- WAINUT (an AI company) transcribed the signs, broke the key and read the letter with AI agents viewing the images.
01 The cipher
The sign alphabet is Latin letter forms in a secretary hand, so the cipher looks like nonsense Latin script. The first hand runs to c. 77r line 6 with nulls on 8.4% of signs; the second takes over at line 7 and writes the postscript with nulls on 1.2%, dropping or shortening letters. The table runs in blocks: a–d map to z u t s, e–h to a b c d, and q–t to e f g h.
The first version of the transcription wrote one shape for cipher q and cipher g. That was wrong: the hand writes two signs, a looped-tail g (= s) and a straight-tailed q (= m). All 339 such signs were re-read by tail on enlarged crops, in order, before any comparison with values given by sense, so no value in the decryption is chosen by sense.
02 The reading
Of 740 words, 737 (99.6%) read as sense, and 706 (95.4%) have no restored or changed letter. The first hand gives 535 of 557 (96.1%) and the second hand with the postscript 171 of 183 (93.4%). The contributor offers to call it a partial reading if more margin than three words is wanted. The key was tested on its own split, which was not set up in advance: −10.17 per letter against a best of −13.38 for 200 shuffled tables, reproduced at −10.18 against −13.56 for 500. The standard validator was not run. The Italian and an English translation are under Full texts.
03 What remains uncertain
- “Read” has three words of margin over the bar, so a few changed words would make it a partial reading.
- Some signs in the second hand carry a stroke above them that was not recorded.
- An independent AI verifier checked the first version; its report is in the folder. No independent check has been run on the final version.
- Three gaps are recorded with blockers (too short, illegible, needs physical access). The images were not seen here.

# Alfonso II d'Este to the protonotary (Claudio Ariosto in the catalogue), 14 Apr 1576, cc. 76-77
Marks. `<x>` is a letter restored or changed against the signs; each one is listed in the table at the end. `{x}` is a letter in the signs that the reading leaves out. `[?x]` is doubtful. Italics stood in clear on the leaf; all the rest stood in cipher. Word division, capitals and punctuation are mine. The second hand has strokes over some signs, which may mark a doubled or omitted letter. They were not recorded sign by sign, so its words are given as the signs spell them and were not expanded.
## First hand, c. 76r l. 1 to c. 77r l. 6
*R.do Mons.r nostro Car.mo*
We saw what you wrote to us in your letter of the 7th about the matter of the unnamed man, and the fear he showed you of having, that stricter proceedings might be taken against him.
We want you to tell him in our name that we would truly be sorry for any trouble of his, but that as far as concerns us he knows very well that he has nothing that can harm him, unless he brings harm on himself, because he is not our servant, nor has he ever been in our pay, although we have at times shown him some courtesy for the labours he has undertaken out of regard for us.
And that even if he were to tell everything he has ever heard from us, setting aside his own affair, which in truth we shall always be glad to see go well, not only would we not care in the least, but we ourselves would always say it freely and without any reserve, since he knows well that we have always told him that, for the true friendship between those lords there and ourselves, it will be most welcome to us to have as much news of their affairs as may be, and that they should prosper and be fully satisfied, as ones who will always share in all their fortunes, and that on every occasion we would be most ready to show them by living deeds our love and very good will towards them.
And you will add that it is for him rather to look to what he himself has told us he has done with Spain, of which however we know only as much as he has reported to us.
And that as to his coming here, we are sure that these our health deputies, to whom we leave the whole charge of these matters, would in no way give him leave to come, given the suspicions that grow greater every day.
And then, as if of your own accord, you will add that he knows very well the agreements that exist between that Dominion and ourselves, and that if he were here and it asked us for him we could not refuse to hand him over, all the less for a case of such a kind that she would make it a crime of lese-majesty, since we do not wish to fail in our duty and in the promise given on a prince's faith; but that, were it not so, you are quite sure we would gladly give him every convenience.
But to tell you frankly, we are coming to the opinion that this is an invention of his, because we cannot believe that, if those lords had such a suspicion of him, they would have proceeded so loosely and not have gone at once to arrest him; but it may easily be that he is rather being hunted there for debts or something else and does not know where to take himself.
But as you know very well, this man is someone from whom to take what one can, but not one to open oneself to in anything, nor to trust further than so much.
So we want you, with all skill and good care, to try whether you can learn anything of it, since it is to be believed that if such an examination and inquiry were true, it would be talked of there in several places, and then to let us know in detail what you have been able to draw out.
We send you fifty scudi, which you will give to the said unnamed man, and you will learn from Tassone in what manner he spoke to him and what promise he made him in our name.

As to the oils and almonds we shall say nothing more to you for now, leaving it to write to you by another post, since Doctor Panino, sent by these merchants for the same purpose, is also to come there.
12. And because we hear that noise has been made there from Rome on a like occasion, you will see to it that you show what it is in fact, and if you hear it talked of you will say freely that we have had no move made about it there, but only that we have had recourse to [?him], hoping that he, with his accustomed fatherly love, would make the fitting provision in it; but that you are quite sure that if we cannot obtain it we shall do whatever is possible to us for the just upholding of our rights.

## Departures from the signs
Every entry below was viewed on a crop. `decryption_cc76-77_1576-04-14.txt` shows the letters with no repair. `python scripts/check_marks.py 76` aligns this reading with that file, letter by letter, and fails on any departure without a mark.
| reading | signs | why |
|---|---|---|
| ve`<r>`o, sa`<r>`a, cu`<r>`e`<r>`essimo, sa`<r>`essimo, have`<r>`, `<r>`iguardo, rife`<r>`to, pe`<r>` | l | the clerk wrote l (p), a plain sign stopping at the baseline, where sense wants r. Of 9 sites an independent reader viewed, 8 are of this kind; the ninth, particolare at c. 76r l. 2, has f's descender and foot, and is now read as f. So the bar is not lost: the sign is a different one, a slip or a second value. p gives no word at any of them. At c. 77r l. 6 the signs give "pephor" |
| `<d>`anno | B | the signs give "tanno". Slip |
| `<p>`er | b | the signs give "fer" |
| E`<t>`, e`<t>` | b | the signs give "ef" twice |
| tan`<t>`o | none | t absent |
| ma`<g>`giormente | e | a c with a stroke, or a real e |
| nostr`<i>`, trovandos`<i>`, inqu`<i>`sitione, `<V>`i, ch`<e>` | blot | sign lost under ink. At c. 77r l. 3 a v is written above the blot |
| `<q>`uando | c | the signs give "guando" |
| faci`<l>`mente | m | the signs give "faciomente" |
| dest`<r>`e[?zz]a | none, then two signs under ink | |
| `<s>`ta | none | the signs give "ta" |
| `<n>`e, ragio`<ni>`, `<a>`morevoleza, `<s>`perando, `<s>`i | none | letters absent in the second hand. `<s>`i stands where a y is written |
| `<m>`o`<s>`trare | g, then none | c. 77r l. 9. The tail of the first sign is a clear loop, so the signs give "sotrare". Sense wants m, and the s of mostrare is absent. The only one of the 339 tails that goes against sense |
| e`<f>`eto | B | t for f |
| esere`{re}` lasciati | | the signs give "eserere lasciati", a dittography; word boundary and cut are my call |
Left as written and marked: [?puntino], where punto would fit but the signs have -in-; "cha" twice, read as a dialect form of che; "a [?ti]", where sense wants the Pope (the next clause has "la ... sua paterna"), perhaps a shortened Sua Santita; [?gagliarde], cipher `l c z b n o z f s a` above the line, which gives letter for letter "pgafliarde", so its first sign and its b are not explained.Translation
