The letters
Pfalzgraf Johann Casimir of Zweibrücken-Kleeburg to Ludwig Camerarius: n. 138 (February 1629) and n. 140 (Calmar, 3 July 1629), part of a series of letters of 1624–1629.
Where
Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich, Clm 10382 (Collectio Camerariana 32), digitised microfilm MDZ bsb00112117, scans 470 and 476–477. Not on DECODE.
The cipher
A German letter cipher of two-digit numbers written run together: each letter has three numbers in a block of consecutive values (14–16 a, 17–19 g, 20–22 n …), and 86 and up are nulls. Names are spelled; no nomenclator was seen.
How it was rebuilt
From the word-by-word decipherment written above the lines of scan 470, then frozen and measured once on scans 476–477, transcribed after the freeze: 0.873 of characters against 0.170 for the best of 200 shuffled keys.
What it says
Money, a sum in reichsthalers, a monthly payment, the King of Denmark, commerce, and later in the year freedom and a marriage. The content is the period decipherment’s, not new.
Still open
The other cipher scans of the series and the clear German text around the groups are not transcribed; numbers 1–13 and 56–58 were not seen.
Credit
WAINUT found the cipher while paging the volume (lead 2187). Brice Dudout (Europe chiffrée) transcribed the groups, rebuilt and tested the key, working with Claude Opus 5.5 agents. The decipherment is the clerk’s of 1629.

01 The letters

Ludwig Camerarius, the Palatine councillor who served the exiled Frederick V and then Sweden, kept a large correspondence, now the Collectio Camerariana in Munich. Among it are letters of Pfalzgraf Johann Casimir of Zweibrücken-Kleeburg, brother-in-law of Gustavus Adolphus, written between 1624 and 1629 (within nos. 106–164 of Clm 10382). Several carry passages in numbers, and a clerk wrote the decipherment word by word above them.

The two letters used here are n. 138 (February 1629, scan 470) and n. 140 (Calmar, 3 July 1629, scans 476–477). Other scans with cipher (418, 447–448, 469, 471, 475, 482, 486) were not transcribed. Halm’s catalogue of 1874 lists the letters without a cipher note; no edition was found.

02 The key and its test

The numbers on scan 470 were split at the word boundaries the glosses give, and each number was given the letter it stands for most often. The values fall into blocks of three consecutive numbers per letter, in the order a, g, n, t, b, h, o, u/v, c, i, p, w, d, k, x, e, l, r, y, f, m, s, z, so the table was extended by block. The key was frozen by SHA-256 together with the protocol and the transcription before scans 476–477 were transcribed.

The measurement used the 33 glossed groups of the held-out letter whose gloss has as many letters as numbers (165 characters). The frozen key renders 0.873 of the characters and 0.667 of the whole words; the best of 200 keys with the letters permuted renders 0.170 and 0.030. The thresholds, fixed in advance, were 0.85 and a margin of 0.30. Afterwards two values were changed, outside the test: 71–73 = y rather than i (the held-out part has freyheit, meyne, heyrath), and 44–46 = p from one word, party.

This is not the cipher of the neighbouring pieces: Oxenstierna’s letter of 1625 in the same volume uses another letter cipher, in Latin, and Clm 10380 n. 60–61 (1636) a three- and four-digit nomenclator. The letter of Carl Pawel to Frederick V of 1624 in the same volume uses this alphabet shifted by three (targets/pawel1624).

n. 138 (scan 470) and n. 140 (scans 476-477): cipher groups with their contemporary glosses not prose

Johann Casimir writes to Camerarius in 1629 about money and troops for the Swedish side (n. 138: sums in Reichsthaler, Denmark, commerce and licences) and, from Calmar on 3 July, about Prince Radziwiłł, his son's marriage, the hereditary kingdom, Lithuania, the Grand Duke and an alliance with Sweden (n. 140).

## Unglossed groups (Daniel's count: certain / probable / restored / unresolved)
470.18	50 14 66 62 69	daler	daler	probable: continuation of "Reichsthaler" cut at the binding (Reichs-daler); 69 = r by the block 68-70
470.20	47 43 63 95	wie+null	wie	certain: w-i-e, 95 = null (>= 86)
470.66	80 23 70 42 69 63 22	striren	-	unresolved: "striren": no German word; one number probably misread (69/64)
476.m	15 80	as	-	unresolved: right margin of scan 476, context cut by the binding

# Agreement over glossed groups not cut by the binding (published key): 99/127 groups decode exactly as glossed; most others differ by one number (a doubtful reading of the microfilm) or by the spelling of the cipher clerk.
