The letters
Letters signed “Ex Conde”, “El Conde” or with pseudonyms (“Rojo”, “Zabulón”, “El Chismoso”) from Barcelona, Mataró, Hostalric and Zaragoza, 1693–1696, to Diego José Dormer, and a slip wholly in cipher. The writers are not identified.
Where
Biblioteca Nacional de España, MSS/8387, Cartas políticas y particulares dirigidas a Diego José Dormer, vol. VI (BDH bdh0000064262), views 132–197. Not on DECODE.
The cipher
A simple substitution, one number from 1 to 25 for each letter, written with dots between the numbers. The alphabet runs in two pieces: a–h downward from 8, i–z upward from 11.
How it was deciphered
The key was recovered on the short passages of views 132–168 from frequencies and cribs suggested by the clear text around them, then frozen and measured on two held-out sets: 0.577 and 0.594 against 0.033 and 0.042 for shuffled keys, under the 0.60 threshold, so the key is partial.
What it says
The muster at Gerona held under a proclamation of death, but leaving out the sick and the new cavalry, “all to reduce the numbers so as not to march out of Gerona”; a night with no generals and no rounds; the viceroy Villena; later, “I am an enemy of Bavaria”.
Still open
The verso of the slip loses every line end in the binding (79.6% of its visible words). Doubtful signs at 120 ppi, three unseen numbers, and the identity of the writers.
Credit
Brice Dudout (Europe chiffrée) found the cipher in the volume, recovered the key, transcribed, read and translated the pieces, working with Claude Opus 5.5 agents. The volume came from Daniel Bourdeau’s BNE sweep (catalogue 1272).

01 The letters

Diego José Dormer (c. 1640–1705) was chronicler of Aragon, and his correspondence fills several volumes at the Biblioteca Nacional. In vol. VI, 26 of 269 views carry cipher: one line of geometric signs on view 10, which belongs to another system and stays open in the catalogue, and views 132–197, all in one number cipher. These are letters of the Nine Years’ War in Catalonia, when the French took Gerona and Palamós in 1694 and Barcelona fell in 1697.

Two documents are worked: a slip wholly in cipher, fol. 190r–v (974 signs, undated, before June 1694 since Palamós is still in Spanish hands), and the ciphered words and phrases inside letters in clear (1,735 signs). Three web searches found no source naming Dormer’s correspondents in Catalonia in these years, so the writers are left unnamed.

02 The key and its test

The values are 1 f, 2 g, 3 e, 5 d, 6 c, 7 b, 8 a, 9 h, 11 i, 13 l, 14 m, 15 n, 16 o, 17 p, 18 q, 19 r, 20 s, 21 t, 22 u, 23 x, 24 y, 25 z; 4, 10 and 12 never occur and are given no value. The key was built on the training passages of views 132–168 only: frequencies, a short list of cribs fixed in advance from the clear text around the passages (“amigo” before “Dormer”, “Cataluña”, “guardias”, “caballo”, “Villena”), then annealing on Spanish quadgrams constrained by those cribs. It was frozen before either held-out set was decoded.

With no decipherment of the time, the measure is the share of the decoded letters that Spanish words of five letters or more cover. On the slip (974 signs) the frozen key scores 0.577 against 0.033 for the best of 200 shuffled keys; on the passages of views 169–193 (261 signs) it scores 0.594 against 0.042. Both clear the margin by far and both miss the absolute threshold of 0.60. The slip’s verso, cut in the binding, and the very short passages of the second set pull the measure down; nothing was changed for them.

03 The reading

The readings were made after the measurements and counted by script, cipher words only. The slip’s recto reads at 98.5% (133 words), its verso at 79.6% of the visible words (103), and the held-out passages of views 169–193 at 98.1% (54 words). In all, 290 words: 255 certain, 11 probable, 16 restored and 8 unresolved, 91.7% without the restored words. The training passages decode to Spanish as well but are not counted, because the key was learnt on them.

The slip tells of the muster at Gerona, held under a proclamation of death and twelve doubloons to informers, which left out the sick and the newly arrived cavalry and did not merge the officerless troops into the old companies, “all to reduce the numbers so as not to march out of Gerona”; 2,562 foot were found inside Gerona and 1,500 could be drawn from Castellfollit and Palamós. The passages speak of a night with no generals and no rounds and the cavalry caught unsaddled (“El Chismoso”, 3 May 1694, before the battle of the Ter), the viceroy Villena, a deposit of money at the Treasury, and later of Montalto put at the head. The Spanish and an English translation are under Full texts.

Slip fol. 190r (view 196), the muster at Gerona

The muster at Gerona: held under a proclamation (death and twelve doubloons to informers), but the sick and the newly arrived cavalry were left out and the officerless troops not merged into the old companies, all to keep the numbers low and avoid marching out of Gerona; 2,562 foot inside Gerona, 1,500 to be drawn from Castellfollit and Palamós; the blame laid on the generals.

Allá se pasó muestra en Gerona con bando, pena de la vida y doce doblones a quien descubriese. No se pasó a los

# English translation of reading_slip.md (inserted slip fol. 190r-v)

‹…› = unresolved; [x] = word supplied for the sense; the verso is given only as the fragments that can be construed (line ends lost in the binding).

There a muster was held at Gerona, with a proclamation: death and twelve doubloons to whoever informed [on false
musters]. The sick were not mustered, nor the cavalry that has arrived, whose troops, lacking officers, they still
have not been willing to merge into the old companies: all of it maliciously tends to reduce the numbers so as not to
march out of Gerona. Even in the muster report, which will come by this post, there is a page of "soldiers on other
duties", as if the offices could know of it, and as if it were not the generals' fault. Inside Gerona they found 2,562
foot, not counting junior officers or the sick; from Castellfollit and Palamós they can draw 1,500, besides what each
day ‹…›; and it is always too few, when Catalonia has not seen so many together for twenty-five years. Beyond that, the
fortresses keep their ordinary garrisons… (verso, fragments) … if our crown had some strength and skill, this would be
the time to give it laws … all united and divided … would incline towards Castile as we would wish … now there are no
counts of … nor others so high as to hinder it …

Slip fol. 190v (view 197), line ends in the binding read in part

Continuation: the fortresses keep their ordinary garrisons; if 'our crown' had strength and skill this would be the time to give it laws; Catalonia would incline towards Castile; no counts left high enough to hinder it.

Builds coherent sentences, but under the read bar of 95% of words read as sense (80% here); the holes are marked in the reading.

# Reading (Spanish), inserted slip fol. 190r-v (views 196-197), made after the measurement

Marks: plain word = certain (the mechanical decryption gives the Spanish word, or a slip of one sign of a kind seen elsewhere); {x} = probable (a doubtful sign settled by the sense); [x] = restored (letters missing or hidden; a word with any restored letter counts as restored); ‹x› = unresolved. "/" = manuscript line end (a word split across a line end is one word). Count: a script over this file; numbers are not counted.

## Normalised text (accents and spelling lightly normalised; verso in fragments)

Held-out passages of views 169-187 (Hostalric 1695, Mataró 1696 and others)

Short ciphered phrases inside letters in clear: 'I am an enemy of Bavaria ... I would sooner kiss the Turk's hand' (Hostalric 1695); no letter is safe; frighten Madrid now and then; a portrait of a man 'coward, mad, proud, shameless' (Mataró 1696); Montalto put at the head.

Reading

reading_passages.md

# Reading (Spanish), ciphered passages of views 169-193 (held-out set H2), made after the measurement

Only the cipher words are counted; the neighbouring clear text is given in «...» for the sense and is not counted.

The training set A (views 132-168) is decoded in decryption_passages.txt and reads as Spanish, but it was not graded word by word and is not in the count: it is the set the key was built on.

Held-out passages of view 193 (inserted leaf, fol. 187) read in part

The main blame lies with the maestre de campo general, who held back the orders and whose charge the missing supplies were; the posts begin to feel the drought; Villena.

Builds coherent sentences, but under the read bar of 95% of words read as sense (93% here); the holes are marked in the reading.

reading_passages.md

# Reading (Spanish), ciphered passages of views 169-193 (held-out set H2), made after the measurement

Only the cipher words are counted; the neighbouring clear text is given in «...» for the sense and is not counted.

The training set A (views 132-168) is decoded in decryption_passages.txt and reads as Spanish, but it was not graded word by word and is not in the count: it is the set the key was built on.

Training set A, views 132-168 (1693-1695) decoded, not read

The passages the key was built on: a night with no generals and no rounds, the cavalry caught unsaddled ('El Chismoso', 3 May 1694); 'Amigo Dormer'; money deposited at the Treasury (Angulo, Juan de Torres); Villena, San Martín, Monforte, the Diputación, Zaragoza 1695, Mataró 1695.

A mechanical decode with holes in most sentences: shown so that the transcription and the key can be checked and improved, not as a reading.
