Sir Simonds D’Ewes’s cipher log of his son’s fits, 1635–36

British Library, Harley MS 286 f. 61 (DECODE R7759, “unknown sender to unknown recipient, 1635”): a small slip, one line for each convulsion fit of the antiquary’s infant son Clopton, written in D’Ewes’s private alphabet. No decipherment of the slip and no printed key were found. The alphabet was recovered from the slip alone, from probable words, and 96.5% of the words are deciphered. Measured on the running Latin reading, the log builds coherent sentences but reads at 89.4% of its words, under the 95% bar.

The document
Not a letter: Sir Simonds D’Ewes’s private Latin record of his infant son Clopton’s convulsion fits, one fit to a line, April 1635 to January 1636.
Where
British Library, Harley MS 286 (the BL catalogue files it under 289; not settled here). DECODE R7759, listed as a non-decrypted letter from an unknown sender.
The cipher
A simple substitution alphabet D’Ewes invented at school. No key to it is printed.
How it was read
The key was recovered from the slip alone by placing probable words (convulsio, plena luna, difficilis) against recurring cipher words, then checked against the calendar and D’Ewes’s Autobiography.
What it says
Forty-four fits to 4 March 1636; the child died on 9 May 1636.
Still open
The last line (trimmed under the mount), one word at the edge of line 13 and a faint phrase in lines 24–25.

01 The slip and its writer

Sir Simonds D’Ewes (1602–1650), the parliamentary antiquary whose manuscripts make up much of the Harleian collection, wrote his private papers in an alphabet of his own. His diary of 1622–24 (Harley MS 481) is partly in it, and a 1915 University of Minnesota thesis deciphered that diary without printing the key. Folio 61 is a small slip mounted on a larger leaf, headed 1635 in ordinary figures, with the margin dates 1635/1636 in clear beside the January entry and a running count in cipher, huc usque xxxii, “thus far 32”, at the end of the August entries. A rule separates the summer entries from those of September and January. The foot of the slip runs under the mount and its last line is cut.

Harley MS 286 f. 61: the whole slip, 30 lines. The margin note at the rule is huc usque xxxii; the last line is trimmed under the mount. Image: British Library, Harley MS 286 f. 61, via DECODE R7759 (image 1).

02 The alphabet

One symbol per letter, words divided, numerals written with the letter symbols (x, v, i as ξ, S, r). Several symbols are ordinary letters used for other values, so at first sight the text looks like garbled Latin script.

No symbol for k, y or z occurs. The letters p and g are written with the same symbol, or with two forms too close to separate here.

03 The decipherment

Dates are Julian (Old Style), as D’Ewes wrote them; the year then began on 25 March. [?] marks a doubtful word, {?} one not deciphered.

The first four lines of the slip
The heading and first four entries: “Aprilis iii. mane circa horam nonam convulsionem habuit. die Veneris.” Image: British Library, Harley MS 286 f. 61, via DECODE R7759 (image 1).

The Autobiography gives the end: the fits came more thickly in the spring of 1636, twelve in one night on 8–9 May, and the child died about two in the afternoon of Monday 9 May 1636, a year and nine months old. D’Ewes blamed “a proud, fretting, ill-conditioned woman for a nurse”, an issue opened in the child’s neck and the violent remedies of Dr Despotine of Bury, and the rickets that followed.

04 Method

  1. The images of R7759 were fetched from DECODE; the second image is only the verso showing through. A search of the BL catalogue named D’Ewes.
  2. No key to D’Ewes’s alphabet was found in print: the Minnesota thesis on his diary and Notestein’s 1923 edition of his parliamentary journal mention the cipher but give no table.
  3. Probable words: a long word recurring on almost every line, <oηSSθ2ro, fits convulsio; a two-word phrase 9θcηd θSηd fits plena luna; Xrφφr<rθr2 fits difficilis. The month names and numerals at the start of each line supplied the rest.
  4. Checks against the calendar: 3 April 1635 was a Friday (die Veneris), 23 April a Thursday (die Iovis), 23 May a Saturday (die Saturni). The moon was full on 23 April, 19 July and 18 August and new on 2 August, as the slip says. On 25 May (“plena luna”) and 12 June (“decrescente”) it was not; the numerals are unambiguous at high magnification, so these are D’Ewes’s own slips or loose wording.
  5. The Autobiography (Halliwell’s edition, 1845) confirmed the start on 3 April 1635 and the count of forty-four fits.
  6. Two full transcription passes over line crops: 92.7% of words deciphered after the first, 96.5% after re-cropping the doubtful words at three times the size. Measured on the words of the running Latin reading (October 2026), 89.4% read as sense, under the 95% bar.

Harley MS 286 f. 61, D'Ewes's log of his son's fits, 1635-36 read in part

Not a letter but a private record: Sir Simonds D'Ewes, in the private alphabet he invented at school, notes in Latin each convulsion fit of his infant son Clopton D'Ewes (b. July 1634, d. 9 May 1636), from 3 Apr 1635 to Jan 1636, with day, hour, moon phase and severity. His Autobiography counts 'forty and four convulsion fits' from 3 April 1635 to 4 March following. transcription.tsv gives the cipher and the Latin line by line.

Builds coherent sentences, but under the read bar of 95% of words read as sense (89% here); the holes are marked in the reading.
