toFrancis I

BnF Français 3081 ff. 41–42 (DECODE R2322), catalogued as “French marshals to the French King, 1 Jan 1520”. Two pages wholly in cipher. George Lasry recovered the key and deciphered the first page (f. 41r) in 2022. The second page (f. 41v) had no published decipherment; his key was applied to it here and decrypts all of it except one symbol and one code group.

The document
Articles sworn by Cardinal Campeggio at the conclave of October 1534, misdated in the catalogue as a letter of the French marshals, 1520.
Where
BnF, f. 41r–v (endorsed “Dupplicata des articles envoyez par messrs les marechaulx”).
The cipher
Key recovered by George Lasry in 2022; his decipherment covers f. 41r only.
How it was read
Lasry’s key applied unchanged to f. 41v, a second full page of about 37 lines.
What it says
Francis I refuses a crusade until Milan, Asti and Genoa are restored; the cardinal swears to press the Emperor for their return if made pope.
Credit
Key and f. 41r by George Lasry, as reported by Tomokiyo.
Still open
One symbol and one code group; the page breaks off mid-sentence.

01 The document and the key

DECODE R2322 carries four images from Gallica: f. 41r and f. 41v in cipher, f. 42r blank, and on f. 42v the endorsement. The cipher is a homophonic substitution with invented signs and no word division. It has 20 letters with one to four signs each, plus signs for CON and ET. Lasry found that the same key also decrypts BnF Dupuy 265 f. 132, a letter of the bishop of Mâcon to the King of 29 May 1535. Mâcon was then ambassador in Rome. On f. 41v the key needed a few adjustments:

02 The decipherment of f. 41r (Lasry, 2022)

Lasry’s decipherment of f. 41r was published only as red overlays on three crops of the page. On 23 October 2026 it was transcribed letter by letter from those crops and checked against the figures of the DECODE image at seven places: one overlay letter was corrected (l. 7, “par armes”), two were confirmed on the figures (l. 22 “pacificque”, l. 28 “si esplore”), and one look-alike in l. 1 is left as a hole (texts/f41r_reading.md, with English). Spelling is the figures’; word division and punctuation are added. The page opens:

Campeggio recalls the wars among Christian princes, which brought the Holy See and Christendom almost to the end; he has worked for a more stable and universal peace, so that Christendom might recover the provinces held by the infidels, fight “le grant Thurc” and root out the heresies of “ce temps si esplore et calamiteulx”. None of this can be done without the counsel, help and power of the Most Christian King. The sentence runs on to f. 41v.

03 The decipherment of f. 41v

Quoted from texts/f41v_decryption.md: words divided, spelling as the figures give it. [brackets] are restorations or a code group, and … marks short gaps.

Translation. The Most Christian King has often been asked to join the expedition against the Turk. He has always refused unless he were first restored to the duchy of Milan, the county of Asti and the lordship of Genoa, which were taken from him by force. Unless that is provided for, the peace, which has no firm bond, will soon kindle a greater war in Italy than before. So the cardinal, if God gives him the grace to become pope, has agreed with the King’s negotiators to the articles below and sworn to them. First, he will use every persuasion with the Emperor(?) and with the holders of Milan to have Milan, Asti and Genoa returned to the King or to his sons. The page ends in the middle of the second clause.

04 Method

The DECODE images were fetched with the project’s login. Two Claude subagents transcribed f. 41v sign by sign, one taking lines 1–19 and the other lines 20–37. They used Lasry’s key table and his red overlays on f. 41r as a reference for this scribe’s hand, then decrypted the transcription with the key. The adjustments in section 01 came from words that repeat across the page. The line-by-line transcriptions are in the repository folder.

f. 41r (George Lasry, 24 May 2022)

The heading and preamble of the articles: 'Articles iures par monsieur le cardinal Campege es mains de messeigneurs les cardinaulx de Bourgon, Loraine et Tornon'. Campeggio sets out the harm the wars of the Christian princes have done to Christendom and the Holy See, his own efforts for a stable peace so that Christendom could turn against the Turk and the heresies, all of which needs the counsel and power of the Most Christian King (the sentence runs on to f. 41v).

# BnF fr. 3081 f. 41r: Cardinal Campeggio's articles for the conclave (October 1534), English

Translation of `f41r_reading.md` (George Lasry's decipherment, figures checked at seven places). Same holes.

Articles sworn by my lord Cardinal Campeggio into the hands of my lords the Cardinals of Bourbon, Lorraine and Tournon.

I, Lorenzo, Cardinal Campeggio, having learnt [?by] long experience how much harm the discord of the Christian princes,
born of their various desires to enlarge their lordship and dominion, has brought to Christendom, and above all to the
Apostolic See: as each has sought to overpower the other by arms and each to defend his own, it has come to war and to
arms among Christians, cruelly, for many years. And some of the past popes have been forced to undergo and enter into
the same danger and expense of war, so far that the Apostolic See [sic: repeated] and Christendom were almost brought
low to the very end. Having many times striven against this covetousness, with those officers to whom it belonged,
being about divers princes, I have put all my study into raising and settling among them a more stable and universal
peace, so that, Christendom remaining at peace and the princes content within their borders, it might think of
recovering so many provinces occupied by the infidels, and of subduing and fighting the common enemy of our faith, the
Great Turk, and of rooting out the many heresies that run in these times so woeful and calamitous. Which things,
so very hard and difficult, cannot be done, not to say thought of, without the good counsel, help and power of the most
Chris[tian] king

(continues on f. 41v: "... and most serene lord Francis, King of France, whose Majesty has often been asked to
contribute to the enterprise of the expedition against the said Great Turk ...")

f. 41v

Francis I refuses to join a crusade against the Turk until Milan, Asti and Genoa are restored to him; Cardinal Campeggio swears that, if elected pope, he will press the Emperor and the holders of Milan to return them. Tournon became a cardinal in 1530 and Campeggio died in 1539, so these are articles for the conclave of October 1534; the page breaks off mid-sentence.

Line numbering: line centres found by ink projection on decode/p2.png; line 19 at y=2411, line 20 at y=2518 ... line 35 at y=4277 (last line). Gap (paragraph break) between line 27 and line 28.

Key note: the sign that looks like "Rg" (P row 3) is P, not T; it gives "penser", "pourveoir", "pouvoir", "par", "partie". The "4"-shape with a loop (ɥ°) acts as R (ɣ° R1 written that way).

(a stain covers the two signs after QVANT; read P A. [UNK1] = Lasry's first "Unknown" (bold ʃ) again; "par ses dictes persuasions" suggests UNK1 = S, which also gives "vers les detenteur…" in line 31. A faint mark in the left margin is not counted. The text runs on past the page: no closing or signature on f.41v.)

Each doubtful place re-cropped from decode/p2.png at 3-4x with autocontrast. Grades: H certain, C probable, M possible, I unresolved.

| Line | Place | Signs seen | Reading | Grade |

| 2 | "a e[s]te" | ȶ (A) ɥ (E), then a faint, lightly inked ʌ-shaped sign, then ◇̲ (T) ⵡ (E) | the faint sign has the form of S row 3 (ʌ), only lightly inked: "a este" | C |

| 15 | "de S?AREES" | ɷɥ (D) ⵡ (E) ʂ (S) = (A) ɣ° (R) ɥ (E) ⵡ (E) ʂ (S), all clear | DESAREES: no unread sign; the word ("de s'arrees"? "desarrees"?) is not understood | letters H, sense I |
| 16 | doubled A | ɗꭗ (Q) ꭗ' (V) K (I) ɖ (N) = (A row 3) ȶ (A row 1), two distinct signs, not a crop overlap | scribal doubling: "qui n'a aucun" | H (signs), C (slip) |
| 19 | sign 4 of "fla?e" | a sign with a head loop and flag to the right and a long descender curling left at the foot; closest to Lasry's Unknown 1 (bold ʃ) / G row 2; not an M form | "fla[m]e" remains a context guess; the sign itself is not M in the key | M |
| 27 | MOII | b (M) ᴧɣ (O) ⵌⵌⵌ (third H sign = Y) K (I) ꭗ' (V) ɣ° (R) E E S | MOYIVREES, "par moy iurees" | H |
| 30 | cluster before "et ses successeurs" | ɱɱɓ cluster = Lasry's Unknown 2 exactly, then the ET sign, S E S | a code group, most likely a person or power holding Milan (the Emperor?), not decipherable from this page | I |
| 31 | SVCCES?VRS | ʂ ꭗ' P ɣ° (C row 2) ⵡ (E) ⅄ (S) + a boxed sign with a stem through it, ꭗ̃ (V) ɣ°• (R) ʂ (S) | the boxed sign is an E row 2 (ɥ) variant rather than A row 1: SVCCESEVRS, "successeurs" | C |
| 31 | end "detenteur[?]i du" | ɇ (E) ꭗ̃ (V) ɣ°• (R) ▲ solid (S row 3) ɷɥ (D) ꭗ' (V); there is no I sign | "vers les detenteurs du duche" (the bold ʃ before DETENTEVRS = S, as in line 37) | H |
| 35 | E?ES | ɥ (E) ꝛ-loop with curled tail (S row 4, as in line 8) ɥ (E) ʌ (S) | "restitu-es es mains": the second sign is S, not Z/V | C |
| 36 | ILVSTRISINES | ... ʑ (T) ɣ° (R) K (I) ⅄ (S) ɥʅ (I row 2) ᵬ (M row 2, part under the stain) ⵡ (E) ʂ (S) | ILVSTRISIMES, "illustrissimes": the supposed N is M row 2 | C |
| 37 | two stained signs after QVANT | ʀg (P row 3) under the stain, ȣ (A row 2), then ɣ° (R), the bold ʃ (partly blotted) E S | "quant par ses dictes persuasions" | C |

Revised readings from this pass: line 8 "desquels en avoit este spoliee"; line 31 "successeurs, comme vers les detenteurs du duche"; line 35 "restitues es mains"; line 36 "illustrissimes"; line 27 "par moy iurees". Still open: line 12 ORVOEES, line 15 SAREES (letters certain, sense unknown), line 19 sign 4, line 30 Unknown 2 code group.

… [most Chri]stian and most serene lord Francis, King of France, whose Majesty has often been sought to contribute to
the enterprise of the expedition against that same Grand Turk, which he has always refused, not being able to do it
unless first His Majesty were reinstated and restored in the duchy of Milan, the county of Asti and the lordship of
Genoa, of which he had been despoiled violently and by force. And while His Majesty was not reinstated in his
lordships, he could not think of so distant an expedition, nor of the things occupied by that same Grand Turk.
Wherefore, seeing that the will and great desire of the said Most Christian King is not so far from arms that he
could not take them up again, in such a way that the peace, which has no firm bond, … is likely to engender very soon
and promptly in Italy another flame of war greater than before, if by means of th[e] … one does not come to think of
providing against it; which, by great experience, is known not to be possible without satisfying the said Most
Christian King in some part. And for this, if it please God to give me the grace to be pope, I have come with the
negotiators of His Majesty to the articles written below and to the conventions sworn by me.

And first, I shall [t]ry, with every demonstration, persuasion and exhortation that could be used, both towards [code:
?the Emperor] and his successors and towards the holders of the duchy of Milan and the whole state of the said duchy,
the county of Asti and the lordship of Genoa, that the said states and lordships be returned and restored into the
hands of the said lord, the Most Christian King, or of the most illustrious lords his children and successors. And
when by his said persuasions and way …
