- The letters
- Cardinal Alessandrino (Michele Bonelli, nephew of Pius V) to the Madrid nuncio Castagna, 1568: ten ciphers, plus one of 1569.
- Where
- Spagna 6/I and 6/II. DECODE has the transcriptions, 9,842 digits in 6/I, with a key but no plaintext; the catalogue here listed them as open.
- The cipher
- Polyphonic: each digit 1–9 stands for two letters, 0 is a null, and a small nomenclator uses four-digit groups with zeros in second and fourth place.
- How it was read
- Lasry’s 2020 key, with a search choosing between the two letters of each digit, scored by a model of 16th-century Italian. It gives continuous Italian on all eleven.
- What it says
- An approach to marry Philip II to a French princess, the Pope’s complaints about the King’s ministers, the Bolognese exiles, and Borromeo’s quarrel with the Milan senate.
- Still open
- A few dotted groups outside Lasry’s list, single-letter choices, and the comparison with Serrano’s 1914 print, which could not be reached.
- Credit
- George Lasry reconstructed the key in 2020.
01 The documents and the key
Spagna 6/I is described by the archive as “Lettere orig. e cifre del cardinale Alessandrino dal 16 gennaio 1568”. DECODE has ten ciphertexts from it (items 1–10: ff. 6r, 42r, 55r, 81r, 88r–89v, 136r, 169r–v, 291r–v, 306r; item 8 has no folio on DECODE), 9,842 digits in all, and one from 6/II (item 13, f. 641r, 1569; 769 digits). None is dated on DECODE; the dossier’s folio order places 6/I in 1568, but R94’s covering letter (f. 44r, Rome 7 November 1567, “Con questa un poco di cifra”) dates that one to 1567, and R96’s covering letter is of 19 May 1568. The transcriptions were made for DECODE in 2016–2020 and are used here as they stand.
Lasry’s key, attached to every record:
- Letters: 1 u|t · 2 i|m · 3 f|g · 4 a|l · 5 o|s · 6 e|n · 7 d|r · 8 b|c · 9 p|z · 0 null. There is no sign for h or q.

02 A marriage for the King of France
The first cipher (f. 6r), as deciphered from the figures and the contemporary decipherment on f. 8:
“His Holiness is asked here by some friends of the crown of France to use his good offices with the Emperor so that he be pleased to give one of his daughters as wife to the King of France; His Holiness has not wished to set this negotiation moving without knowing the King’s mind in this matter. Your Lordship will therefore find it out … assuring him that His Holiness will never say a word of it before he knows what his intention is …” The September decryption had taken the codes 2010 and 4010 with Lasry’s tentative values and made this a French bride for Philip II; the decipherment gives the Emperor and the King of France. Charles IX married the Emperor Maximilian II’s daughter Elisabeth of Austria in 1570. The fourth cipher (f. 81r, R96) is still waiting for an answer “sopra il particolare del matrimonio”, judging that it might bring “qualche bona unione o lega tra questi tre principi principali della Christianità”.

03 All eleven, in brief
Each letter’s full Italian text and English translation are in the Full texts section below; the quotations are from those readings.
- 6/I/1, f. 6r (R93). The French marriage request, above.
- 6/I/2, f. 42r (R94), November 1567. Jurisdiction: the Pope “non intende di revocare i suoi privilegii antichi, ma sì bene di levare li abusi cresciuti in essi per colpa delli suoi ministri”; if the King strips the Holy See of its authority, the Pope will resist “non con forze temporali” but with spiritual ones, “usque ad effusionem sanguinis”.
- 6/I/3, f. 55r (R95). The French ambassador’s claim about raising troops in the state of Milan; the crusade alms and indulgence; the man who said “che il Re si saria alienato da questa santa Sede”; the Pope grieves more for the King’s soul than for any human respect.
- 6/I/4, f. 81r (R96). The marriage again; Scipione [?Cuttinardo], who aspires to be Regent of the Collateral, indicted by the Holy Office as a heretic; the order against the Hermits of St Jerome.
- 6/I/5, ff. 88r–89v (R97), four pages. The Duke of Ferrara, offended over exiles of the contado of Bologna, may complain to the King through Count Ercole Tassone; the Duke is the Holy See’s “feudatario”, bound to return its exiles. The French ambassador at Constantinople offers to join the Huguenots and the Protestants with the Turks, and at Adrianople urges Piali Pasha to come with a great fleet against Rome: “la povera Christianità”.
- 6/I/6, f. 136r (R98). The King’s orders to his ministers in Italy against a Huguenot move lose their effect while the ministers wait for new commissions; the nuncio is to ask for express orders.
- 6/I/7, f. 169r–v (R99). The Order of St Lazarus, its Grand Master and two galleys from Gian Andrea Doria; Don John of Austria’s opposition; in Milan the senate’s threats to the archbishop’s vicar before the Corpus Domini procession: the Pope “pensa di procedere in questa causa contra di loro con quelle armi spirituali che il signor Dio gli ha date”. The letter builds coherent sentences but reads at 94.7%, under the 95% bar.
- 6/I/8 (R100). The King’s ministers obstruct the Inquisition of Catalonia; the nuncio is to execute the brief.
- 6/I/9, f. 291r–v (R101). The chinea and the St Peter’s-day dues accepted under the fisc’s protest; devolution under the investitures of Julius II and Julius III; “un manifesto scisma in quello regno”, bishops’ notaries and executors imprisoned; “chi è disobediente a Dio et al suo vicario non sarà meraviglia se perderà la obedientia de' suoi sudditi”.
- 6/I/10, f. 306r (R102). Cardinal [Espinosa] fails in his office with the King in the service of the Holy See, and the Pope has judged him “indegno di quella dignità che tiene”; the nuncio may let him know, if amendment can be hoped for.
- 6/II/13, f. 641r (R115), 1569. The nomination of Don [?Francesco] de Reinoso to the see of Monreale, and the transfer to it of pensions on the archdeaconry of Toledo. It builds coherent sentences but reads at 88.5%, under the 95% bar.
04 Method
Each digit 1–9 gives two letters and 0 nothing, but a group X0Y0 may be a nomenclator word or two letters with their nulls.
The decoder (targets/alessandrino1568/decrypt.py) works through the page keeping the best few partial decryptions at each step; at each digit it tries both letters, the null, and
any nomenclator group that starts there, and scores the resulting Italian with the repository’s shared five-gram model (it-cinquecento,
spaces removed). The same code, with a different key table, decrypted the Morosini ciphers of 1588–89. Every page decodes at about −1.75
nats a letter, the level of ordinary text for this model, and ends in a few letters of clerk’s padding.
That score did not make the text a reading. Divided into words, the beam output had corrupted runs
(“liberagemptume”, “unmannifestsobismain”) and many single letters chosen by the model, and the reading audit of 22–23 October
2026 classed the letters decoded, not read until each was checked. The records’ DECODE “cleartext” images were then opened one by
one: R94 (f. 45r), R95 (f. 58r) and R100 (under the cipher, f. 280r) on 22 October, and R93 (f. 8), R96 (f. 80), R97 (f. 90r–v), R98
(f. 139), R99 (a leaf after f. 169), R102 (f. 307) and R115 (a half-sheet with f. 641) on 23 October each hold the contemporary
decipherment. Each was transcribed and aligned word by word with the figures (reread_aless_align.py); where the decipherer and
the figures differ, the figures decide. R101 has no decipherment; it was decoded again with the extended key and deciphered word by
word on the figures.
05 What remains uncertain
- R94: two short gaps the contemporary decipherer also left (the group 9 0 4 0 2 0 before S.M., and a verb after “comincia”).
- R95: the dotted groups [08.] (the Crusade?) and [3.] (a person), and two words where the decipherment is illegible.
- R101: two places under a burn and a hole in the paper, one illegible group, the place-name [?Sora] and code 6020.
- R93, R96–R99, R102, R115: short runs and codes the decipherers left blank or gave words the figures do not carry: one group in R93; the heretic’s surname in R96; four runs in R97 (“Duca di Ferrara” and “Principe di Condé” rest on the decipherer’s word); [?possa] and [?et] in R98; the stretch after d’Oria and the head of the Milan paragraph in R99 (code 2020 open); three words in R102; codes 4050, 2010 (where the decipherer has N.S.), 9070 and four runs in R115, whose last sentence is only partly carried.
- Dotted groups [01.], [03.], [4.]8 and others are partly or not resolved.
- No comparison yet with Serrano’s edition, which prints Alessandrino–Castagna letters (not reachable from here).
- Transcriptions are DECODE’s; where the decipherer and the figures differ the place was checked on the image.

R94 (ASV, Segreteria di Stato, Spagna 6/I, item 2, f. 042r (DECODE R94), unknown)
Covering letter Rome 7 Nov 1567 ("Con questa un poco di cifra"): the Pope does not mean to revoke the King's ancient privileges but to remove abuses grown through his ministers; the nuncio is to say so at a suitable moment, once the King is out of the trouble of the funerals; if the King strips the Holy See of its authority, the Pope will resist with spiritual arms "usque ad effusionem sanguinis".

Where the decipherer and the figures differ the figures are followed (he wrote "apertamente" for libera+3060 "-mente", "S.S." for 1010 N.S., "questa materia" for "queste materie", "si rimette" for "si haverà", "et fatto" for "de fatto", "non ha forze" for "non con forze"; he skipped "et viva"). Marks: [?word] partly carried, […] unread, [NNNN] unidentified code. ## Notes on the figures - "anchora": figures 0 1^. 0 8 (a dotted group and one figure); the decipherer's word kept. - "antichi": written anti + 2 0 9 (the code for "che" used as a syllable). - "concesso": 9 8 6 5 (con-ce-s), the last vowel not enciphered. - "come le dico": 4040 2 4 6 7 2 8 5; the decipherer read "come le dica". 4040 is "Milano" in R95's decipherment, so "come" here rests on this decipherment only. - First gap: 9 0 4 0 2 0 before 3010 (S.M.); the decipherer left dots here too. - Second gap: 6 2 4 7 6 after "comincia" (letters e/n i/m a/l d/r e/n); the decipherer wrote "negare", then "giovare" above; neither fits the figures. - "forze": 3 5 7 0^. 6 — the dotted zero is z (also "terzo", "patienza", "senza" in R101). - "usque": 1 5 4 0 9 0; the Latin formula from the decipherment.

# R94 — English (Cardinal Alessandrino to the nuncio, cipher of [7 November 1567]) Taking a good occasion, and invited also by the talk His Majesty sometimes has with Your Lordship on these matters of jurisdiction, His Holiness wishes you to tell him freely that His Holiness does not intend to revoke his ancient privileges, but rather to remove the abuses that have grown up in them through the fault of his ministers, who, for their own private interest more than for anything else, have tried to enlarge them and to use them to the detriment of that authority which granted His Majesty's predecessors the graces and privileges they allege. But this will have to be said at a suitable moment, as I tell you, […] His Majesty begins […] freely, and is out of the trouble of the funerals; adding further that, should His Majesty be resolved, through his ministers, to strip this Holy See in fact of its authority in some cases, His Holiness — not with temporal forces but with those the Lord God has granted him — will put up every strong and lively resistance, even to the shedding of blood.
R95 (ASV, Segreteria di Stato, Spagna 6/I, item 3, f. 055r (DECODE R95), unknown)
The French ambassador's claim about raising troops in the State of Milan would give the King cause to withdraw his protection; the crusade alms: the Pope acted so that Christian discipline should not slacken in Spain, not to deny the indulgence, and will grant a new concession; he grieves more for the King's soul than for any human respect; the nuncio is to speak in this sense.

# R95 — English (Cardinal Alessandrino to the nuncio, cipher of early 1568) Answering your letters of last month more particularly, I tell you that, were what the French Ambassador has said not true — about being able to raise troops in the State of Milan in case it were attacked from here — it would give the King just cause to give up his protection and even to become indignant with that Ambassador, who spreads such falsehoods. Now as to the [08.: the Crusade?], His Holiness did not say it […] so that those who gave the alms should not gain the indulgence, but so that Christian discipline should not slacken in Spain, as has happened elsewhere; but His Holiness is content to grant him a new concession of it in such manner as his conscience allows, at the great instance made [an] by […], who in the office he [?performed] on this matter did not fail to say that the King would become estranged from this Holy See; but that, if that happened, His Holiness would grieve more for the loss the King would make of his soul than for any other human consideration. And in this same sense Your Lordship is to speak whenever you hear the subject raised.

# R96 — English (Cardinal Alessandrino to the nuncio, cipher of Rome, 19 May 1568) Same holes as R96_reading.md. Modern spelling; codes as names. His Holiness waits to hear some answer from Your Lordship on the particular of the marriage between the Emperor and the King of France, about which I wrote to you in the last few days so that you might learn the Emperor's view of it, His Holiness judging that if by chance it were concluded, one could easily hope for some good union or league among these three chief princes of Christendom. You will let the King know as soon as possible that in this Holy Office Scipione [?Cuttinardo] has been charged as a heretic, who, it is understood here, aspires to be Regent of the Collateral [Council of Naples]; and as the news is of great importance, as you see, do not fail to tell it to the King at once in His Holiness's name. If in the execution of that order against the Hermits of St Jerome there should be opposition or any difficulty, once Your Lordship has made the proper inquiries you must [give] me notice of everything, so that from here provision can be made for [?whatever] will be needed in this matter.
R97 (ASV, Segreteria di Stato, Spagna 6/I, item 5, f. 088r-089v (DECODE R97), unknown)
The Duke of Ferrara, displeased over the Bolognese exiles (Cavaliere Gualengo), may complain to the King through Count Ercole Tassone; the Pope's case under the investiture. The French ambassador in Constantinople offers to join Huguenots and Protestants with the Turks; in Adrianople he urged Piali Pasha to bring the fleet against Rome; his removal is to be sought.

The decipherer's draft is fast and often loose; where it and the figures differ the figures are followed, and several places he left blank or guessed are read from the figures (notes below): "il conte Ercole Tasone" (he left dots), "riservare una orechia per N.S." (2 0 9 = "chi" as a syllable), "mette pericolo", "con Turchi" (1 1 7 + 2 0 9), "Piali Bascià", "esortandolo a procurare … a preocupare Roma", "da lor parte". Code values from this letter: 7070 Imbasciatore (with a following 2 = the plural "-i"), 4010 Re di Francia (as in R93 and R96; Lasry's "Sua Santità" does not fit "oltra che [4010] mostreria che questi officii non sono fatti di suo consenso"), 2010 Imperatore, 8070 Ugonotti, 3050 Italia (written 3 0 5), 6050 Imbasciatore (as in R95), 4060 5050 = "il Duca di Ferrara" (the decipherer's words; the codes are not otherwise attested), dotted 3 + 4 = "Principe di Condé" (the decipherer's words). The decode of 23 Oct (beam search) is superseded. Marks: [?word] partly carried, […] unread, [word] supplied, [NNNN] an unidentified code. ## Notes on the figures - "il Duca di Ferrara, [?per] mala satisfatione": 4 0 6 0 5 0 5 0 2 0 2 4 4 4 0 5 4 1 2 5 3 4 1 2 5 6 6. 4060 5050 read as the decipherer's "il Duca di Ferrara"; "2 0" is not "per" in the key. - "sentito di N.S. in un negotio": 5 6 6 1 2 1 5 0 7 2 0 1010 2 6 0 1 6 0 6 6 3 5 1 2 5 (the decipherer "havuto ... nel"). - After "fuorusciti" (3 1 5 7 1 5 8 2 1 2, end of line 2) line 3 repeats "8 2 1 2" (-citi): the clerk's repetition. - "con Re": 0 9 0 3010 (the decipherer "con S.M."). - "il conte Ercole Tasone": 2 4 0 9 1 6 | 6 7 8 5 4 6 | 1 4 5 5 6 6 (9 = con); the decipherer left dots. - "da esso Imbasciatore": 7 4 0 6 5 5 0 6 0 5 0 (6050, as in R95); the decipherer "da lui". - "si ha a questa": 5 2 0 4 0 4 0 6090 — not a code 4040, but "ha" (4) and "a" (4) with nulls. - "della quale esso è per feudatario": 7 6 4 4 0 309 4 6 0 6 5 5 0 6 0 5020 3 6 1 7 4 1 4 7 2 5 (the decipherer "alla"). - "et in spetie una": 0^. 2 6 0 5 9 6 1 2 6 0 1 6 4 (the decipherer "et spetialmente in una"). - "[…] che ho voluto": 2 6 0 2090 5 0 1 5 4 1 1 5; "2 6" not read (the decipherer "il che"). - "possa dire a Re che sia contenta riservare una orechia per N.S.": 9 5 5 4 0 7 2 7 6 0 4 0 3010 2090 5 2 4 0 9 1 6 6 1 4 0 7 2 0 5 6 7 1 4 7 6 1 6 4 0 5 7 6 2 0 9 4 0 5020 1010 — orechia = 5 7 6 + 209 (chi) + 4. - "starà […] avertita": 5 1 4 7 4 0 5 0 2 5 0 4 1 6 7 1 ? 1 4; "5 2 5" not read (the decipherer "però"). - "mentre il sopradeto si fermerà in corte et mi avisarà": 2 6 6 1 7 6 2 4 5 5 9 7 4 7 6 1 5 5 2 8^3 6 7 2 6^4 7 4 2 6 8 3? 7 1 6 0^.0 2 2 0 4 1 2 5 6 7 4 (the transcription's doubtful 3 and 4 give fermerà; the decipherer "si scriverà in corte"). - "che si levasse di […] mal Imbasciatore": 2090 5 2 0 4 6 1 4 5 6 0 7 2 0 4 0 6 4 . 4 0 9 4 0 2 4 4 0 7070; "4 6 4 . 4 9 4" not read (the decipherer "di levar quel malo Imbasciatore"). - "che è là in nome di Re di Francia": 2090 6 0 4 4 0 2 6 0 6 5 2 6 0 7 2 0 4010. - "che se si comporta molto mete pericolo, sì come oferisce": 2090 5 6 5 2 0 9 9 5 7 1 4 0 2 5 4 1 5 0 2 6 1 6 0 9 6 7 2 8 5 4 5 0 5 2 0 4020 5 3 6 7 2 ? 3 6 (the decipherer "porta molti motti … et come offerisce"). - "con Turchi per asaltare […] asediare": 0 9 0 1 1 7 2 0 9 0 5020 4 5 4 4 1 4 7 6 0 9 0 4 5 6 7 2 4 7 6; the 9 before "asediare" not read. - "Imbasciatori del Principe di Condé": 0 7 0 7 2 0 7 6 4 0 3^. 0 4 — 7070 + 2 (-i); dotted 3 + 4 read as the decipherer's "Principe di Condé". - "Turchi": 1 1 7 + 2 0 9 (as Chiesa, chinea in R101). - "oltra che Re di Francia mostreria": 5 4 1 7 4 0 2090 4010 2 5 5 1 7 6 7 2 4 — the decipherer "S.S. mostrarà". - "Et per altra via se intende similmente": 0^.0 5020 4 4 1 7 4 1 2 4 5 6 2 6 1 6 6 7 6 5 2 2 2 6^4 3060. - "lo Imbasciatore [di] Re di Francia": 4 5 0 7070 4010; no figures for "di" (also before "Francia", 7070 1050). - "con Piali Bascià": 0 9? 0 9 2 4 4 2 0 8 4 5 8 2 4 — Piyale Pasha, kapudan of the Ottoman fleet. - "contra Imperatore et contra la Italia, esortandolo a procurare": 9 1 7 4 2010 0^.0 9 1 7 4 4 4 0 3 0 5 6 5 5 7 1 4 6 7 5 4 5 0 4 0 9 7 5 8 1 7 4 7 6. - "di venire con grandisima armata a preocupare Roma et N.S.": 7 2 1 6 6 2 7 6 9 0 3 7 4 6 7 2 5 2 2 4 4 7 2 4 1 4 4 0 9 7 6 5 8 1 9 4 7 6 7 5 2 4 0^.0 1010. - "non solo come Imbasciatore [di] Francia ma anche de comissione delli principi protestanti": 2060 5 5 6^4 5 4020 7070 1050 2 4 4 6 2090 7 6 8 5 2 2 5 2 5 6 6 7 6 4 2 …. - "là […] Imbasciatori da lor parte": 4 4 0 5 2 2 6 2 0 5 0 7 0 7 2 0 7 4 0 4 5 7 0 9 4 7 1 6; "5 2 2 6 2 5" not read. - "in Italia facilmente": 2 6 0 3 0 5 3 4 8 2 4 3060 (305 = 3050). - "si manderiano infiniti Ugonotti": 5 2 2 4 6 7 6 7 2 4 6 5 2 6 3 2 6 2 1 2 8070. - "delli Italiani": 7 6 4 2 0 3 0 5 6 2 (305 + n i), then filler.

# R97 — English (Cardinal Alessandrino to the nuncio, cipher, Rome 1568) Same holes as R97_reading.md. Modern spelling; codes as names. It is known for certain that the Duke of Ferrara, out of the dissatisfaction he has perhaps felt with His Holiness in a matter of the exiles of the county of Bologna, dealt with here in his name by the Cavaliere Gualengo, intends to make some complaint of it to the King; and if Count Ercole Tassone comes to your court he will probably have a particular commission to speak to him on this matter. That office ought not to be done by this ambassador, considering the fatherly affection His Holiness bears him and the little respect shown on his side to this Holy See, of which he is a feudatary, not observing the terms of his investiture, and in particular one that obliges him to hand over the exiles of this state whenever they are asked of him. […] I wanted Your Lordship to know, so that if you hear it spoken of you can tell the King to be pleased to keep an ear for His Holiness, who will justify himself in such a way that he does not doubt he can satisfy all the princes, if it comes to hearing their reasons; but if you do not hear it spoken of, there is no need to take any step, and you will be […] watchful while the said man stays at court, and keep me informed of what happens from time to time. It would be well to see, through His Holiness, that that bad ambassador who is there in the name of the King of France be removed, who does so many ill offices for Christendom that if he is tolerated he puts it in great danger, as he offers to unite the Huguenots with the Protestants in a league with the Turks to attack […] and besiege poor Christendom from every side; and to establish that league he affirms that ambassadors of the Prince of Condé and of the Protestants will soon be in Constantinople, promising that after everything has been ruined and destroyed they will all unite and be all of one faith with the Turks. This talk, which at another time would have been laughable, is now much to be feared for afflicted Christendom; so that by removing so bad an instrument from there, besides the King of France showing that these offices are not done with his consent, no small benefit would be done to the affairs of Christendom. And by another route it is likewise understood that in Adrianople the ambassador [of] the King of France has done many ill offices with Piali Pasha, general of the sea, against His Holiness, against the Emperor and against Italy, urging him to procure from the Sultan to come with a very great fleet to seize Rome and His Holiness; and he has done this not only as ambassador [of] France but also on commission from the Protestant princes, promising that ambassadors on their part will soon be there […], and offering that in Italy countless Huguenots would easily and quickly be sent to corrupt the minds of the Italians.
R98 (ASV, Segreteria di Stato, Spagna 6/I, item 6, f. 136r (DECODE R98), unknown)
The King's orders to his ministers in Italy against a Huguenot move into Italy are good, but ministers delay waiting for new commissions; the nuncio is to press for express orders now, so that the Pope can call on them in time for the security of Italy.

Although the orders which the King wrote in recent days that he had sent to his ministers in Italy, so that they should be provided in case the Huguenots of France wished to turn towards these parts, were good and suited to the need, nevertheless, because such provisions are often delayed by the ministers themselves wanting to wait for new commissions from the King and new limited orders, whereby harm is done or at least the enterprise is put off while these commissions are awaited, Your Lordship will therefore press His Majesty to give express and limited orders to his ministers in Italy now, so that if the case should ever come — which God forbid — His Holiness [?could] make use of them in time and place, for the public good [?and] for the security of Italy and of His Majesty's states […].

# R99 — Cardinal Alessandrino to the nuncio Castagna, cipher of [Rome, July 1568] (Spagna 6/I/7, f. 169r–v): reading Rests on: the contemporary decipherment on the leaf bound with it (`R99_decifrato_f170.txt`, DECODE cleartext image DOC_R99_D1284), found 23 Oct 2026 (r2g), checked figure by figure against the key (`python reread_aless_align.py decode/DOC_R99_D1670_1670.txt all texts/R99_reading.md`; both pages run together). The clear letters around it on the record (ff. 164-168, 21 June-27 July 1568) date it to the summer of 1568. Where the decipherer and the figures differ the figures are followed (notes below): "Et N.S." (4080 1010) for "Però S.S."; "esperientia di questa religione" where he left a gap; "havea commesso"; "provedesse"; "delli naviganti" for his gap; "signor Gioan Andrea"; "con N.S." for his struck word; "senza qualche alteratione" for his "tanto quanto la merita"; "lo ha risposto"; "esso don Giovani"; "alla persona di N.S." for "alla grandezza"; "deveno" for "doveriano"; "novamente in Milano uno atto" for his struck words; "contra di loro". New code values from the decipherment and the figures: 7040 galere, 9090 havendo (also R101), 6020 causa, 4080 = et at the head of a letter (as in R100). Marks: [?word] partly carried, […] unread, [word] supplied, [2020] an unidentified code. # R99 — English (Cardinal Alessandrino to the nuncio, cipher, summer 1568) Same holes as R99_reading.md. Modern spelling; codes as names. And His Holiness has resolved to make trial of this order of St Lazarus, and had instructed the Grand Master to provide himself with two galleys [?so that] he could keep to these seas and run them for the safety of navigators; and he already hoped to have found them from Signor Gian Andrea Doria, [2020] […] His Holiness […] this; Don John has made [?a little] noise about it with His Holiness, opposing in this the plan of the said Grand Master [?and] chiefly His Holiness's will, and the matter has not passed without some ill feeling. Your Lordship should know that His Holiness answered him as Don John deserved and as befitted His Holiness's person, who is resolved, however, that others be found if those of Doria cannot be had, because if these knights of St Lazarus do not then do what they must, they will have no greater enemy than His Holiness; but first he wants to try them. Of which it is well that Your Lordship be informed, to be able to answer in case you hear it spoken of. [02.] [1040] […] lately in Milan an act of their own authority in prejudice of the archbishop's jurisdiction, having told his vicar [with] threatening words on the eve of Corpus Domini that he must not bring the armed household to the procession; which [2020] [?was] done at the instigation of the Senate. His Holiness intends to proceed in this cause against them with the spiritual arms that the Lord God has given him. For Your Lordship's information.
R100 (ASV, Segreteria di Stato, Spagna 6/I, item 8, f. 789 (DECODE R100), unknown)
The King's ministers mean to deceive the nuncio over the Inquisition of Catalonia and keep people from coming to him for absolution; the ambassador presses for the case to be referred to the King; without waiting for another resolution the nuncio is to execute the brief when the parties ask.

# R100 — English (Cardinal Alessandrino to the nuncio, cipher of spring 1569) From the way His Majesty's ministers proceed one can see that they intend to deceive Your Lordship in that matter of the Inquisition of Catalonia, and they prevent those people from coming to you for absolution. Here the Ambassador is now pressing His Holiness that this case be referred to His Majesty in Spain; so, without waiting for any resolution from here other than the first, Your Lordship is to put the brief into execution when the parties ask you for it.
R101 (ASV, Segreteria di Stato, Spagna 6/I, item 9, f. 291r-v (DECODE R101), unknown)
The Pope accepted the hackney and the St Peter's day dues with the fisc's protest, not as census but as fruits of a fief of the Holy See, and claims devolution under the investitures of Julius II and Julius III; the King's ministers have raised a schism in Naples, imprisoning the bishops' notaries and executors (an aged doctor died in prison); God will punish who troubles His Church, and the Pope will have to take measures if the King does not remedy it.

# R101 — Cardinal Alessandrino to the nuncio Castagna, cipher of [summer 1569] (Spagna 6/I/9, f. 291r–v) Rests on: the figures only. No decipherment is on the DECODE images of this record (cipher 291r–v; clear letters 286v–293v, none a decifrato) and no printed text was found (see the reread log). Read word by word with the key as extended by the R94/R95/R100 decipherments (9 = con, dotted 0 = z, 0^.0 = et, X0Y codes, single letters for doubles) and checked with `python reread_aless_align.py texts/R101_transcription_corrected.txt 291r.jpg texts/R101_reading.md` (and 291v.jpg). # R101 — English (Cardinal Alessandrino to the nuncio, cipher of summer 1569) For Your Lordship's instruction, [you will know?] that His Holiness [recently?] accepted the hackney and the customary moneys paid on St Peter's day, but with a protest by the fisc, to which His Holiness adheres — that is, that he has not accepted it as a census but as the fruits of that kingdom, a direct fief of this Holy See — and claims the devolution [of the kingdom] on many heads of the investiture of Julius II and Julius III, of holy memory. The King or his ministers having by his order stirred up a manifest schism in that kingdom, as anyone free of passion can make out, taking away obedience to the Apostolic See, so that neither the bishops nor their vicars can have notaries to serve them, nor executors who, for the most part, in doing their office are not imprisoned by the royal ministers; and […] from this […] a doctor from [?Sora], of decrepit age, was left to die in prison. If such is His Majesty's mind, as his ministers say, His Holiness will have patience and will pray the Lord God to free His holy Church from such tribulation; but let the King beware of the judgement of God, who is indeed wont to permit His Church to be troubled, but in the end whoever troubles it will not go unpunished; and whoever is disobedient to God and to His vicar, it will be no wonder if he loses the obedience of his own subjects. Therefore, if the King does not resolve to remedy it soon, His Holiness will be obliged to take some measure there [6020]. For Your Lordship's information.

# R102 — Cardinal Alessandrino to the nuncio Castagna, cipher of [Rome, summer 1569] (Spagna 6/I/10, f. 306r): reading
Rests on: the contemporary decipherment on the slip bound as f. 307 of the same file (`R102_decifrato_f307r.txt`,
DECODE cleartext image DOC_R102_D1308), found 23 Oct 2026 (r2g), checked figure by figure against the key
(`python reread_aless_align.py decode/DOC_R102_D1672_1672.txt 306r.jpg texts/R102_reading.md`). The clear covering
letter around it (DOC_R102_D1307/D1309) is docketed 27 June and 6 August 1569. Where the decipherer and the figures
differ the figures are followed: "io ho scritto" ("s'io"), "deveria", "onde da N.S." ("che da N.S."), "reputato
indegno" (7 = r and d: he wrote "in|degno" across a line), "[?essersi] pentito" (the figures give e-r-s-i), 1010
N.S. where he wrote "S.S.". New code value: 7030 = Cardinale [Espinosa] (the decipherer "Card.le Spinosa"; also
"il Card.le" where the figures give 7030 alone). The subject is Cardinal Diego de Espinosa, President of the Council
of Castile and Inquisitor General, made cardinal by Pius V in 1568.

- "del Cardinale [Espinosa]": 7 6 4 0 7 0 3 — 7030 written X0Y; the name is the decipherer's. Line 5: 2090 7 0 3 0 "che

# R102 — English (Cardinal Alessandrino to the nuncio, cipher, summer 1569) Same holes as R102_reading.md. Modern spelling; codes as names. In the public letter I have written more mildly of Cardinal [Espinosa] than His Holiness has in truth spoken of him and of his bad conduct; but I want you to know, for your own information, that His Holiness ordered me to let Your Lordship know that the Cardinal fails in many things to do the office he should with the King in the service of this Holy See, so that His Holiness has judged him unworthy of the dignity he holds, and has said at times that he [?did not] regret having made him cardinal. But if one could hope for amendment in him, it would be well to let him know it; but in this Your Lordship will act as you think fits the time and the persons, leaving it to your [?own] prudence.
R115 (ASV, Segreteria di Stato, Spagna 6/II, item 13, f. 641r (DECODE R115), unknown) read in part
Two months after asking (30 November) for the royal nomination of Francisco de Reinoso, the Pope's scalco, to the see of Monreale, with the transfer of the pensions on the archdeaconry of Toledo, the nuncio is to press Philip II for a speedy dispatch.
Builds coherent sentences, but under the read bar of 95% of words read as sense (88% here); the holes are marked in the reading.

# R115 — Cardinal Alessandrino to the nuncio Castagna, cipher of [Rome, January 1569] (Spagna 6/II/13, f. 641r): reading Rests on: the contemporary decipherment on a half-sheet bound with the cipher (`R115_decifrato_f641bis.txt`, DECODE cleartext image DOC_R115_D1340), found 23 Oct 2026 (r2g), and on the figures, read word by word against it (`python reread_aless_align.py decode/DOC_R115_D1685_1685.txt 641r.jpg texts/R115_reading.md`). The decipherer's draft is fast and loose; where it and the figures differ the figures are followed: "ricercare" (he "ricercai"), "et il consenso ancora" (he "il [assenso] anchora"), "che haveva imposte" (he "et gravezza imposte"), "avisandomi [?ancora] del vero [?…]", "non manchi di parlarne con Re", "et avisarmi poi", "la tratta di costà", "per quelli mezi che pareranno migliori a Re". Code values: 6020 causa / negocio (as in R99), 2010 here where the decipherer wrote "N.S." (the Pope's scalco; elsewhere 2010 is the Emperor: noted, not resolved), 4050 not identified, 9070 where he wrote "risposta". The person is Francisco de Reinoso, Pius V's scalco segreto, named to the see of Monreale (Sicily, a royal nomination) and later bishop of Córdoba. Date: the clear letters on the record are of January 1572, but the content (the request made "two months ago, the last of November") fits the Monreale nomination of 1568-69; the record's own dating (Spagna 6/II, item 13, 1569) is kept. # R115 — English (Cardinal Alessandrino to the nuncio, cipher, [January 1569]) Same holes as R115_reading.md. Modern spelling; codes as names. I wrote to [4050] [?of Alessandrino] two months ago, on the last day of November, that he should ask the King in His Holiness's name for the nomination to the church of Monreale in the person of Don [?Francisco] de Reinoso, private steward of [2010], and also the consent to be able to transfer the pensions that he had laid on the archdeaconry of Toledo onto the same church, informing me [?also] of the truth […]; of […] that, as I have had no [9070] so far, His Holiness wished me to give Your Lordship the same commission, so that you do not fail to speak of it with the King […] first you can have a good occasion, pressing him for the speedy dispatch, so that the matter does not drag on for ever, and then to let me know […] his decision. […] the cause of […] […] the trade from there His Holiness will […] satisfy, even if it is pursued by those means that seem best to the King.
