Spanish despatches of 1593: Miranda, Sessa, Ibarra

Philip II
toPhilip II

BnF Français 3983 nos. 45, 79 and Français 3984 no. 47 · Spain’s management of the Estates of 1593 and the Infanta’s candidature · no decipherment published

Three despatches in the Spanish office cipher of 1592–93, whose key Satoshi Tomokiyo had reconstructed and published as an image; the office’s own key, with the code list his table lacks, was found through DECODE in another volume, and 92.5% of the three letters’ groups now read as sense.

The letters
Four Spanish despatches of 1593: Conde de Miranda to Feria (no. 45), Sessa to Diego de Ibarra (79), Sessa to Philip II (47) and Ibarra from Paris (68). The catalogue lists them with no decipherment.
Where
BnF fr. 3983 ff. 98 and 162 and fr. 3984 ff. 108 and 145, via Gallica. The office key for the first cipher is fr. 3995 f. 97.
The cipher
Two ciphers: a syllabic one (two-digit consonant+vowel numbers) with a code list, and the Feria–Mansfeld syllabic cipher used on f. 145.
How it was read
Tomokiyo’s published key tables (syllables only) were applied; f. 97 of the Nevers key book gave the missing nomenclature. The decipherer’s gloss on no. 47 agrees with the result.
What it says
Nos. 45 and 79 discuss a legate, an election and a request for a safe way to send word; no. 47 reports delay waiting for news by sea.
Still open
Measured sense: nos. 45, 47 and 79 together 1,212 of 1,310 groups (92.5%); no. 68 only 224 of 598 (37.5%), since the Feria–Mansfeld code list is unpublished (374 groups).

01 What the three pieces are

The catalogue cites piece numbers, which are not folios. BnF fr. 3983 and fr. 3984 are two volumes of the Collection Mémoires de la Ligue, and their catalogue notice carries a piece-by-piece dépouillement that gives both. Taken from it:

piecefoliothe entry
Copie.”

Neither volume’s canvases are labelled, and neither is foliated at a constant rate: some pieces are shot page by page, others as openings, and the leaves carry piece numbers and folio numbers in different corners. The map was built by reading folio numbers off a full-width top strip at intervals: for fr. 3983, c178 = f.98, c200 = f.111, c220 = f.122, c276 = f.156; for fr. 3984, c188 = f.103, c228 = f.123, c266 = f.144. That places the three letters at canvases 178, 286 and 198, and each was confirmed on the image.

02 Two keys, published as images

Tomokiyo’s page for Philip II’s reign carries 32 images, two of which are the keys that matter here:

As with the Maisse ciphers, the local copy of that page in this repository is a text dump, so the tables are absent from it and the leaves look keyless. Tomokiyo reconstructed the keys from other letters. He lists these letters as “undeciphered”, which on cryptiana means that no contemporary decipherment is known; no decipherment of them had been published.

Applied, the tables give Spanish. The syllables are two-digit numbers for consonant + vowel, so 38 94 68. 31 73 40 89 23 91: decrypts to yo · su · pon · go · que · ha · va · de · ser. Every line also carries code groups the table does not have.

03 The office key, and its nomenclature

The catalogue entry ends “Verify first. Tomokiyo’s Spanish keys of 1589–93; DECODE for Sessa.” DECODE’s record search returns two records for these correspondents, and both are keys:

DECODEnamesendertype
4076BNF_Français_3995_094Don Diego de IbarraKey — homophonic substitution, nomenclatures
4077BNF_Français_3995_096Don Diego de Ibarra, Duc de SessaKey — homophonic substitution, nomenclatures

Both point into BnF fr. 3995, the Nevers cipher key book, a volume this repository already fetches for the Lorraine cipher. Folio numbers there run about canvas − 91 in this stretch (c188 = f.97, c190 = f.98, c194 = f.101). Folio 97 is the key itself, and it is complete.

BnF fr. 3995 f. 97: the Spanish office key, with the letter alphabet across the top and the syllable table beneath
BnF fr. 3995 f. 97 (canvas 188): the letter alphabet across the top, and beneath it the syllable table: ba 10 … bu 14, ca 19 … cu 15, da 24 … du 20, on through za/ze/zi/zo/zu. It is identical to Tomokiyo’s reconstruction from other letters, and so confirms it. Image: Bibliothèque nationale de France, fr. 3995 f. 97 (canvas 188), via Gallica.

The sheet gives the letter alphabet with its symbol equivalents (a = 4 / ʒ, e = n / f / ʃ, g = 3, i = y / 6, n = x / ·, o = 7₂, r = y / :, s = ∆, u = o, y = q, z = ∂), the syllable table, a row of Nulles and, beneath them, the code list that Tomokiyo’s table does not have.

The nomenclature of BnF fr. 3995 f. 97: Spanish words in columns with their cipher groups
The code list (nomenclature) of the same sheet: aunque ʒo, aviso ʃes, exercito xel, estados vul, Francia gam, lettera ra, mucho hur, manera cer, magestad ʒum, mas dox, negocios norî, quando nes, que ʒot, Rey tas, Reyno tis, remedio sas, reputacion pem, Roma vos, seignor ʒus. Image: Bibliothèque nationale de France, fr. 3995 f. 97 (canvas 188), via Gallica.

These are the groups that were open on the leaves. With them the diacritics can be fixed, and two of the marks are confirmed on plaintext: the ring is −h−, giving 1̊9 = cha in achaque, and the dot above is final −l, giving 13 with a dot = bol in bolsa. A trailing dot is final −n, a colon final −r, a circumflex final −s, a bar means the number itself, an umlaut doubles the consonant, and ⊤ marks a code group. Added 2 October 2026: the back of the sheet (f. 97v) carries the endorsement “1592 Chifre d’entre le Duc de Parme et le Roy Cat.co en l’an 1592, lequel sert aussi pour le Duc de Sessa et Don Diego de Ybarre”, so the key is the office’s own for Sessa and Ibarra; f. 98 is a different, French key (an earlier version of this page put the endorsement there). The nomenclature has over a hundred word entries, not the forty first transcribed; the rest were transcribed again from the image, and thirteen groups of the three leaves that had stayed open now resolve (tim = intención, hus = príncipe, nur = ninguna, pol = duque, 50T = Su Magestad, 61T = tiempo, and others), with Vor corrected to opinión. The gloss “en particular” on f. 108 stands over ʒir, which the sheet gives as particular. The note that prompted the re-reading came from satorunet (satoru.net/crypt).

04 The decipherment

The key was applied to the three leaves. Each was fetched at native resolution, deskewed (the angle within ±3° that maximises the variance of the row profile) and cut into centred line strips.

no. 45, f. 98: the Conde de Miranda to the duque de Feria, Naples, 25 February 1593

Every cipher line on the leaf is deciphered. The one band without a decipherment is a blank gap with show-through from the verso and holds no cipher:

… el [alla] con este achaque, que siendo confidente … se po[drá] procurar … a costa de la bolsa … yo supongo que hava de ser … residencia … sobre esto … a que hava dado ya alguna [Roma] … no [se] verá lo que en esto convernà hazer, que yo me remito a su prudencia. no. 79, f. 162: the duque de Sessa to Diego de Ibarra, Rome, 11 March 1593

Every cipher line on the leaf is deciphered. There is no cleartext; the only bands without cipher are the folio number 162 and the docket 11 de Março 93:

… de ver los testemonios que a todos levantan … a [legato] … de feria … constantes, si bien los que bivimos en [Roma] no desemos de … por [aviso] que no dura 4 dias, ni pasa a los sucesores. no. 47, f. 108: Sessa to Philip II, Rome, 30 June 1593

This leaf carries a partial contemporary decipherment above the cipher. Where both survive, the decryption agrees with the gloss, which checks the office key on a third letter of the group:

05 What is open

The key gives plaintext on all three letters, on none of them completely. Written out as Spanish and measured word by word on 24 October 2026, no. 79 builds coherent sentences but reads at 87.5% of its words and no. 47 at 91.7%, under the 95% a complete reading needs. What is still open:

fr. 3983 no. 45, f. 98: Miranda to Feria, Naples, 25 Feb 1593 decoded, not read

The Conde de Miranda, at Naples, to the Duque de Feria, in the Spanish syllabic cipher of 1592-93: advice on a confidant to be used 'con este achaque', a business 'a costa de la bolsa', and a request that a person be chosen through whom he can be written to without it being understood. Read line by line with the office key (BnF fr. 3995 f. 97); reading45.md gives cipher and reading per line, sense.tsv the 5 Oct re-transcription with its scoring.

A mechanical decode with holes in most sentences: shown so that the transcription and the key can be checked and improved, not as a reading.

# fr. 3983 no. 45, f. 98 (canvas 178) — Conde de Miranda to the duque de Feria, Naples, 25 Feb 1593

Cipher: the Spanish syllabic cipher of 1592-93. Key: the office original, **BnF fr. 3995 fol. 97**
(Gallica btv1b525085665, canvas 188), found through DECODE records 4076/4077. Tomokiyo's published
table (`phelippes2.png`) gives the same syllables but no nomenclature.

Transcribed from the native 4810x6996 scan, deskewed (-3.0°) and cut into centred line strips
(`deskew.py` -> `D98/`). Line numbers are of the deskewed strips. `·` marks a group not yet resolved.
Diacritics: dot above = final -l, `+` = -m, dot after = -n, `:` = -r, `^` = -s, ring = -h-,
hook = -l- or -r-, bar = the number itself, umlaut = doubled consonant, T = nomenclature.

**Every cipher line on the leaf is read.** Band 10 of the deskewed strips is not a cipher line at all: it is a
blank gap carrying only show-through from the verso. What remains open is the groups marked `·` within the
lines — mostly rarer nomenclature and a few diacritics ambiguous at this resolution. The last line runs into the clear
*"Dios Gu. al S. de Nap.s a 25 de hebre.o 1593"*, Miranda's signature and the docket *"S. duq de feria"*.

## Sense

Miranda writes to Feria under cover of an errand (*con este achaque*) and as a confidant; the business can
be pursued, but **at the expense of the purse** (*a costa de la bolsa*), and he **supposes it will have to
be** so. Residence; Rome; what has already been given. **No one will see what it will be fitting to do in
this, and I refer myself to his prudence. I only beg him that** — when he has a letter — **he have the person
who** … **write to give some message, if it should be** … **and to do it in such a way that it is not
understood, because the hour that** … he will **lose much** …

Code groups resolve from the office key: *hur* = **mucho**, *cer* = **manera**, *ʃes* = **aviso**,
*ra* = **lettera**, *vul* = **estados**, *vos* = **Roma**, *nor* = **negocios**.

# fr. 3983 no.

Diacritics: dot above = final -l, `+` = -m, dot after = -n, `:` = -r, `^` = -s, ring = -h-,
hook = -l- or -r-, bar = the number itself, umlaut = doubled consonant, T = nomenclature.

Code groups resolve from the office key: *hur* = **mucho**, *cer* = **manera**, *ʃes* = **aviso**,
*ra* = **lettera**, *vul* = **estados**, *vos* = **Roma**, *nor* = **negocios**.

fr. 3983 no. 79, f. 162: Sessa to Diego de Ibarra, Rome, 11 Mar 1593 read in part

The Duque de Sessa, at Rome, to Diego de Ibarra, wholly in cipher: 'de ver los testemonios que a todos levantan ... los que bivimos en Roma', the election and 'diversas pretensiones', 'no puedo dexar de hazerlo, a lo menos, de que no esten ministros conformes'. Read line by line with the office key (BnF fr. 3995 f. 97); unresolved groups marked.

Builds coherent sentences, but under the read bar of 95% of words read as sense (88% here); the holes are marked in the reading.

## Coverage

**Every cipher line on the leaf is read.** Bands 1 and 2 of the deskewed strips are not cipher: band 1 is the
top margin carrying the folio number *162*, band 2 the docket *11 de Março 93* with show-through above it.
The cipher proper runs from band 3 to band 16, and all fourteen carry readings. What remains open is the
groups marked `·` within them.

## Sense

Sessa writes to Ibarra from Rome about **the testimonies that they raise against everyone**; the legate; the
duke of Feria; **those of us who live in Rome**; a matter that **does not last four days**; what **passes to
the successors**, and how **ordinary** these things have become; **difficulties in the election**, and with
all that; the business is **so important** that **he hopes he will favour it**; **in such a manner that it
suits**, among those who follow; **diverse pretensions**, in each one, **if I am not mistaken**; and
**I cannot refrain from doing it, at least, so that the ministers are not in agreement** — **won over** —
**of which they cannot be trusted**.

The nomenclature groups carry the names and the political vocabulary: *vos* = **Roma**, *rol* = **election**,
*nor* = **negocios**, *cer* = **manera**, *ʃes* = **aviso**, *ʃur* = **ministro**, *far* = **mente**,
*vom* = **legato**, *vas* = **seignor**. `4̄`, with the bar, is the numeral **4** itself.

`4̄`, with the bar, is the numeral **4** itself.

fr. 3984 no. 47, f. 108: Sessa to Philip II, Rome, 30 June 1593 (copy) read in part

A copy of Sessa's despatch to Philip II, with the beginning of a contemporary decipherment written above the cipher lines in lighter ink ('por via de mar ... difiriendo de dia en dia'); read with the office key, which agrees with the gloss wherever both survive.

Builds coherent sentences, but under the read bar of 95% of words read as sense (92% here); the holes are marked in the reading.

This leaf is the one the BnF notice calls *"avec chiffre et commencement de déchiffrement"*: a contemporary
decipherer wrote the plaintext **above** the cipher lines in a lighter ink. Where the gloss survives it is
quoted, and it **agrees with the decode** — an independent check on the key from a third letter.

Headed *"Copia — 30 de Iunio 1593"*. Same cipher and key as nos. 45 and 79 (office key **BnF fr. 3995 f. 97**).

On the 30th of last month, by a courier of my own, I informed Your Majesty at length of everything that was offered
here in particular on the affair of France, of which [I have] sent duplicate couriers by sea and land; and the despatch
has gone on being put off from day to day, another courier to Your Majesty, waiting to see whether some certain news

copy of which goes with this. At the said time, as I was leaving my lodging, [ho] I read it in the coach; and because of
the [yos] that he commends to me in it, I resolved to say nothing to His Holiness unless he spoke to me of it; so I
thought to tell of what Your Majesty writes to me about Gondi and Pisani, to see whether His Holiness would hint to me
something of this [ru] of the Duke of Mantua. Before […] […] […] I [began] to speak to His Holiness, he told me […] […] I
have received […] […] letter of the Duke of Mantua, he has seen that it must have been given to me on purpose before
the audience; and His Holiness, knowing it, answered him that in a que dicho [los] he had received it, and that he
confessed to His Holiness that if not …
