The documents
Three pieces the catalogue grouped as one target: del Vasto to Charles V from Ischia, 27 September 1527 (no. 10); an anonymous report (no. 6); an Italian memoir from Madrid, 11 April 1528 (no. 20).
Where
BnF Français 3022, a recueil of imperial correspondence of 1527–28 (Gallica ark btv1b90601558).
The cipher
No. 6 combines a letter layer with code groups and syllable signs. No. 20 is in the code of Hieronimo Ranzo, a kinsman of the Chancellor Gattinara; all 1,315 of its groups were transcribed.
How it was read
No. 6 is del Vasto’s own letter of early December 1527: Lasry’s key gave 92.6%, and code groups identified from context plus corrected syllable signs bring it to 98.0%. This project’s solver recovered only function words of no. 20.
What it says
No. 6 is del Vasto’s plan for moving the army out of Rome.
Credit
No. 10 was deciphered by George Lasry (2023), text edited by Satoshi Tomokiyo (2026), with 47 of 1,146 words queried. Paolo Rosson (with Claude) published a key for no. 20 on 6 October 2026; it reads 79.8% of the groups in connected stretches on this transcription.
Still open
In no. 6, ten code groups (11 signs) and nine short stretches (23 signs). No. 10 was not reworked here.

01 The volume

Français 3022 is a sixteenth-century recueil of originals and copies, mostly imperial correspondence of 1527–28 that came into French hands. There are about twenty letters of Juan Pérez, the imperial secretary in Rome, several of them in clear. There are three letters of the Marquis del Vasto (Alfonso d’Ávalos), who commanded the imperial infantry after the Sack of Rome. There are Spanish “avertimientos” of 1528 from Fuenterrabía and Bayonne, and a small bundle of Italian espionage papers. The notice’s folio numbers run about three higher than the ink foliation. Below, folios are the ink numbers and “views” are Gallica’s (ark btv1b90601558).

02 Checked first: existing decipherments

The catalogue says “no decipherment noted”. No contemporary decipherment of no. 6 was found on the leaves or in the eighteenth-century Clairambault copies of this volume’s pieces.

The decipherments are modern. Tomokiyo’s cryptiana pages record that George Lasry sent him a solution of no. 10 in 2023. In 2026 Tomokiyo edited it into a Spanish text and published it as “Gasto–Charles V Cipher 1”. That text is not complete: of its 1,146 words, 47 carry a query, 19 of them a bare “?” for a group not decoded, and a few stretches are garbled; Tomokiyo still asks for someone to finish it. He also published Lasry’s preliminary letter-level decryption of a second cipher, used in no. 6 and in no. 19, asking for someone who knows Spanish to finish that too. No. 10 is in that first cipher, a different system from no. 6’s with its own key: Cipher 1, whose key Lasry recovered from no. 10 itself, is a separate cipher from Cipher 2, whose key reads no. 6 and no. 19. No. 10 is mentioned here as context and was not reworked; this page presents Cipher 2 only.

03 No. 6: del Vasto’s December letter

The piece catalogued as an anonymous report opens in clear: “A seis de noviembre escrivi a V. M. muy largo y tanbien a xxvij de setiembre, cuyos duplicados van con esta”. The clear first page reports the agreement with the Pope for “la libertad suya y de los cardenales” (the capitulation of 26 November) and says that del Vasto is still in Rome only because the Prince of Orange, “el qual se espera que verna de aqui a tres dias”, has not yet arrived to take the command. That puts it in the first days of December 1527.

The cipher is a Caesar shift of one place over a 21-letter alphabet, with homophones, plus a nomenclator of three-letter groups beginning with b, c or d. Lasry’s decryption has the letter layer right; it checks against the f. 16v ciphertext word for word. It leaves the groups as [doz], [deh] and so on. His key also pairs a row of syllable signs two to a label (al, con, de, el, es, la, lo, no, para, por, qve, sin), and checked against the glyphs these pairings merge different signs: boz is esto, not “fin” (“y por esto pienso”, “en estos tiempos”); bab is mas; bar is tan (“tan adelante”, “tan cerca”); bop is como; bopt, Lasry’s “con s”, is ellos (“porque ellos no tienen gente”); bie is el, not “al”; bis is de; and bep is es in some places and en in others. Two of his cipher words are not text at all: at stands at every boundary between clear and cipher, going in and coming out, and quia stands before the cipher on f. 17r and f. 41r. They are switch markers. The barred sign ≡ is a stop.

The code groups were identified by taking every occurrence of each across nos. 6 and 19 and reading the Spanish around it. All are grade I (inferred from context); none is confirmed by a key or a clear copy.

With these, the deciphered text of ff. 16v–17v is a strategic proposal. Del Vasto wants the army out of Rome and moving north before Lautrec settles the matter in Lombardy. His plan: secure Siena, “la qual es muy devota de V. M.”; threaten Florence so that the League must come to its aid; take Perugia, “una tierra del Patrimonio muy rica y muy gruesa”, and the state of Urbino, “en el qual se hallará poca resistencia”; and pass into the Marche, “donde no pueden faltar vituallas”. It ends with a warning that runs through all his letters of that winter: “que el exército por lo de advenir no se puede sostener desta manera”, and that with so many shortages “es imposible que el servicio de V. M. se haga como sus fieles vasallos deseamos”.

04 What remains uncertain in no. 6

Every code value above is grade I, inferred from context. The 34 signs not yet deciphered are these.

Ten code groups, eleven signs. Each has one or two contexts, and none fits a single value. Blocker: open codes; more contexts are in no. 19 ff. 41–43, which are not yet transcribed.

Nine short stretches, 23 signs besides the codes. The signs are transcribed, but the syllable values that make sense elsewhere make none here, most likely because Lasry’s labels merge different glyphs, as they do for es/en and con/tan/ellos. Blocker: open codes; they need a glyph-level retranscription of these words.

A third letter in the same key would settle most of them. No. 19 is one. Lasry decrypted its first leaf; ff. 41r and 41v were searched on the images for the open groups, which gave bet = dello and the switch markers, but ff. 41–43 have not been transcribed in full. CSP Spain III.2 no. 233 summarises its content from a copy in the Salazar collection, not its words, so it gives no crib.

05 What would finish it

The work is in hand here: a full transcription of no. 19 ff. 41–43 for more contexts of the ten open groups, and a glyph-level retranscription of no. 6 to separate the syllable signs Lasry’s labels merge.

No. 6, BnF fr. 3022 ff. 16v-17v, del Vasto to Charles V, [Rome, early December 1527]: George Lasry's preliminary decryption, and this project's reading

The Marquis del Vasto to Charles V from Rome, early December 1527, after the agreement for the Pope's liberty: his plan to take the army out of Rome toward Tuscany, secure Siena, threaten Florence, take Perugia and the state of Urbino and pass into the Marche, with the warning that the army cannot be sustained 'desta manera' without money. prior/BnF_fr3022_f16_decryption.txt is George Lasry's preliminary letter-level decryption (cryptiana GL.htm), which also serves as the sign transcription; texts/no6_decryption.txt is this project's current reading of the cipher runs with the code groups identified (98.0% of 1,680 tokens), and n6_reading.md its edited text of 18 Sept.

# BnF fr. 3022 no. 6 (ff. 16–17v): Marquis del Vasto to Charles V, [Rome, early December 1527]

> **Superseded in part (22 Sept 2026).** The measured reading is `n6_signs.tsv` (`n6_measure.py`: 98.0% of 1,680 cipher tokens). Changed since this file: da = otro (not liga), dop = tiempo (not invierno), bet = dello, dab = tiene; Lasry's syllable labels corrected (boz = esto, bab = mas, bar = tan, bop = como, bopt = ellos, bie = el, bis = de, bep = es/en); <37> = final(mente); "at" and "quia" are switch markers. See NOTES.md.

The catalogue lists this as "Rapport, en espagnol, avec chiffre, à l'empereur" (no author). It is del Vasto's.
It opens "A seis de noviembre escrivi a V. M. muy largo y tanbien a xxvij de setiembre, cuyos duplicados
van con esta", and reports the agreement for the Pope's liberty "y de los cardenales". Del Vasto stays in Rome only until the Prince of Orange arrives, "el qual se espera que verna de aqui a tres dias", which dates it to early December 1527.

**Cipher.** This is Lasry's "Gasto–Charles V Cipher 2": a Caesar +1 substitution over a 21-letter alphabet,
with homophones, plus a nomenclator of three-letter groups beginning with b-, c- or d-. Lasry's preliminary
letter-level decryption (cryptiana, GL/BnF_fr3022_f16_decryption.txt, 2026) is sound. I checked it against the
f. 16v ciphertext: dʃfp = creo, nnbt = mas, qʃftxp = presto. What it lacks is the meaning of the code groups.

## Code groups identified from context (this session)

Confidence: **sure** means two or more independent contexts agree; *probable* means one good context.
The contexts come from Lasry's decryption of both no. 6 (ff. 16v–17v) and no. 19 (f. 40, 6 Nov 1527), which
share the key.

Del Vasto's strategic proposal to the Emperor is readable: march the army out of Rome toward Tuscany, secure
Siena, threaten Florence so as to draw off the League, take Perugia and the state of Urbino, and cross into the
Marche. This came before Lautrec's march to Naples was confirmed. f. 39 (the loose sheet the archivist linked
to this piece with "voy devant f. 17 v°") is in Cipher 1 and belongs to no. 10, as Lasry and Tomokiyo already
found.

## Reading

… […] […] I believe this is more likely, because, according to the [dnh], they will not follow it in coming so far
forward, since there is no army of theirs remaining in Lombardy strong enough to resist a large band of Germans that the
King of Hungary could, by Your Majesty's order, send down into Italy. And if that happened, and they found themselves so
far advanced, I believe they would find it hard to go back, and harder still to stay and [bnq], and in the end they could
only expect great loss; and for this reason I think they will want first to finish the business of Lombardy rather than
take another road.

And … is to win [rar] on the way and put it under Your Majesty's command, which in these times is […] that one must most
work to finish, since it will suffice to sustain the army, which is the most important thing, and the one Your Majesty
must most desire. The Duke of Urbino […] another army is at Narni and Todi, lands of the Patrimony; they are few men. And
my opinion is, first, that before the army goes out Siena should be secured, which is very devoted to Your Majesty, and
in this enterprise it will serve […] thousand [cny], for in truth we hold them so as to keep it safe. And when the army
goes out it will go […] road, because victuals will not be lacking, and it will strike fear into [car] and give occasion
to these enemies whom we have so near to make them make [bny] a move; and if they see that we are going against Florence,
they believe they will go to relieve it, which they can do; and if they gather them up, which might not be, the army
can go towards Perugia, which will be found unprovided, because they have not the men to defend Florence and leave the
said Perugia garrisoned, which is a very rich and very populous land of the Patrimony, and the chief of […] country,
which will certainly be taken. Finally, leaving it provided, one can go to the state of Urbino and take it, in which
little resistance will be found, and pass into the Marche, where victuals cannot be lacking.

And besides, it will be possible to see what the army in Lombardy does: if it marches, in [cnt] part one can expect […]
more advantage, because it is outside the Kingdom and in a part that is guarded as if the army were inside […]; and if it
persists in the business of Lombardy, one can more easily go to relieve it [beb], because the road is better and more
abundant in victuals. Finally, if the Swiss do not take refuge, [rar] it will be possible to make an agreement […], and
besides they would pass into Lombardy. And in all this I shall not fail to tell Your Majesty that the army cannot in
future be sustained in this way, and that Your Majesty should think, as I have written in other letters, either of some
means of money or of making war on them in the way it ought to be made, putting them in such straits that they ask for
it; and let Your Majesty believe that, with so many wants as there are in this army and so many miseries, it is
impossible for Your Majesty's service to be done as we your faithful vassals desire, and …
