Asegurandole en primer lugar que el reparo que hace sobre el articulo del proyecto del tratado deste con esse reyno
es muy como de su gran juizio y prudencia, y que creo ser cierto que estos ministros han convenido con el de Dinamarca
en todos los puntos del proyecto que embie a V.S.; pero si la Dinamarca añadiesse el de no oponerse a las armas que la
Suecia, que es lo que esta supone, pretende aora, todos los articulos anteriores que contradixessen a esto quedaran
anulados. Y mejor que yo save V.S. que no ay tratado en que no aya tantas contradiciones, casi como [?] [?], y que las
mas veces no vienen a ser sino un juego de palabras con que pretextar lo que hacen y lo que no quieren hazer los
principes. Ya tengo assegurado a V.S. que he representado y representare siempre lo que importa que la Suecia tenga el
freno desse reyno. Suplico a V.S. que si tuviere ocasion de hablarle le de a entender que yo le he escrito las muchas
obligaciones que tengo a su suegro el condestable. Yo he creydo deverle decir que lo que V.S. me escrive le hallo tan
buen dinamarques como español, por parecerme que es de su servicio el tener en essa corte esta opinion. Dicho
enbiado no es harto parcial de inclinacion; yo le he dicho que assegurare desto a V.S. y de su merito, y que quiças

## Translation

Assuring you in the first place that the objection you make to the article of the draft of the treaty of this
[kingdom] with that kingdom is very much in keeping with your great judgement and prudence, and that I believe it
certain that these ministers have agreed with the [envoy] of Denmark on all the points of the draft which I sent to
Your Lordship; but if Denmark added that of not opposing the arms of Sweden, which is what this [kingdom] supposes and
now claims, all the preceding articles that contradicted this would remain annulled. And Your Lordship knows better
than I that there is no treaty in which there are not as many contradictions, almost as [?] [?], and that most times
they come to be nothing but a play of words with which to give a pretext for what princes do and for what they do not
wish to do. I have already assured Your Lordship that I have represented, and shall always represent, how much it
matters that Sweden should have the curb of that kingdom. I beg Your Lordship, if you have occasion to speak to him,
to give him to understand that I have written to you of the many obligations I have to his father-in-law the

## Reading

Con grandes promesas de la proteccion de la Suecia, que les ha costado buenos regalos; y desseando el embiado de
Brandembourg embiar un gentil hombre suyo en su navio, destos diputados le respondieron no se atrevian, por no dar
celos a la Suecia. Lo qual, junto a saver yo el gran fundamento que aqui hacen sobre la amistad con Hamburg y las
utilidades que della han sacado otras veces, pues, como V.S. save, le devieron el poner su exercito en estado de
invadir la Dinamarca en la ultima guerra que con ella tuvo este reyno, lo qual ha producido el buen efecto de
satisfacer mucho a este embiado del elector de Brandembourg; y espero produzca el de que, intimidados los
Hamburgeses, quiten a los Suecos mucha parte de la confianza que sobre ellos tienen, lo qual es cierto los retendra
mucho y alentara ygualmente a los Dinamarqueses.

## Translation

With great promises of the protection of Sweden, which has cost them good presents; and when the envoy of
Brandenburg wished to send a gentleman of his in their ship, these deputies answered him that they did not dare, so
as not to give umbrage to Sweden. This, together with my knowing the great reliance they place here on friendship
with Hamburg and the advantages they have drawn from it at other times (for, as Your Lordship knows, they owed to it
the putting of their army in a state to invade Denmark in the last war this kingdom had with her), has produced the
good effect of greatly satisfying this envoy of the Elector of Brandenburg; and I hope it will produce that of the
Hamburgers, being intimidated, taking away from the Swedes a great part of the confidence they place in them, which
will certainly hold them back much and will equally encourage the Danes.

embajador de Francia, y el de no asistirle por aora con el socorro que pretende en virtud de su tratado ultimo; y no he
savido lleve dicho embajador orden de efectuar el casamiento de este rey con la hermana desse, pero tengo entendido
que hablara en ello. En quanto al tratado de que V.S. me habla entre este reyno y la Inglaterra, me asseguran que solo
es una renovacion del ultimo que ajusto en esta corte monsieur de Coventrie, embajador de aquel rey, de que embie
copia a V.S. en 24 de octubre; pero en el estado en que yo me hallo, casi privado del comercio de las gentes, puedo
engañarme en todo aun mas que hasta aqui. Y por lo que toca al conservar esa corona en nuestra union, mi parecer ha

## Translation

I have already told Your Lordship in my previous letters that the principal aim this kingdom has in having sent its
ambassador to that [court], as I understand, is to gain time by this to satisfy the instances this ambassador of France
makes, and that of not assisting him for now with the succour he claims by virtue of their last treaty; and I have not
learned that the said ambassador carries orders to conclude the marriage of this king with the sister of that one,
but I understand that he will speak of it. As to the treaty between this kingdom and England of which Your Lordship
speaks to me, they assure me that it is only a renewal of the last one which Monsieur de Coventry, ambassador of that
king, concluded at this court, of which I sent a copy to Your Lordship on 24 October; but in the state in which I find
myself, almost deprived of dealings with people, I may be deceived in everything even more than hitherto. And as to
keeping that crown in our union, my opinion has been, is and always will be that there is no other means of holding

[…] to give you an account that, having been told that before this senate separates, which will be within very few
days, a resolution will be taken in it on whether or not to assist France with armed hand, two days ago I stopped the
remedy of the baths which I had been continuing for some days past, in order to go out as soon as possible to make
what efforts I can so that the said resolution may be favourable to us, preferring the care of the royal service to
the risk of my life, and to that of being left entirely deprived of health, which in my estimation is the greater
evil.
